"Ian!"
I screamed until my voice was hoarse and my lungs hurt more than my heart.
"Ian! Mrs. Knight!" No answer.
Only the roar of the fire… and the hiss of rain fighting the flames.
I stumbled forward, soaked to the bone, the muddy earth sucking at my feet. I stood before the house… the place that had once held laughter, warmth… our whispered dreams, and shared glances. Our memories.
Now it was just ash.
The rain finally overpowered the fire, steam rising from the smoldering wreck, but it was too late. Everything… gone.
I stepped through the blackened doorway, smoke and damp soot clinging to my dress. The walls were scorched… the photos melted… not even a trace of us survived.
"Ian…" My voice cracked, trembling as my tears joined the rain.
I dropped to my knees, right there on the ruined floor, where once he had kissed me for the first time. Where we had sat side by side, dreaming of a future I had thrown away.
I cried. Like I had never cried before.
