Once Alaric was dressed, the head maid led him through the grand corridor, toward the heart of the estate.
They entered a richly decorated chamber.
Selene stood by the window, sunlight casting a soft glow across her elegant figure.
She turned slowly at their sound of footsteps.
Her emerald eyes locked onto Alaric, scanning him from head to toe.
His frame, though lean, held a quiet strength—shoulders squared, posture straight.
His hair was a dark ash brown, still damp from the wash, clinging slightly to his neck.
A small scar lined the edge of his jaw, barely visible.
His amber-gold eyes held a quiet storm behind them. Calm, but dangerous.
The servant outfit clung to him well.
Simple, but clean, highlighting the natural grace in the way he carried himself.
Selene's lips curled into a faint, mocking grin.
"Well, you don't look that bad." She said, her voice like cool steel.
Alaric didn't respond. He simply stood still, eyes down, but his silence wasn't the cowering kind.
It was watchful. Controlled.
Selene's gaze lingered on him a moment longer before she spoke again.
"There will be guests here tonight. Nobles. Allies. Parasites. You'll serve them food and wine. You have to do your job."
Alaric gave a silent nod.
The head maid cleared her throat, speaking carefully, "Lady Selene, we don't even know if he—"
Before she could finish her sentence—
Selene's eyes cut to her like a blade.
"Did I give you permission to speak?"
The head maid flinched, her head instantly bowing. "Forgive me, my lady."
Selene looked back at Alaric with narrowed eyes.
"This is your test, slave. Pass it… and I might just keep you around."
Selene didn't wait for a reply.
She simply turned, her heels clicking softly against the polished floor as she walked away, her presence as cold and commanding as ever.
The head maid released a breath she'd been holding, then gave Alaric a quick glance.
"Follow me."
She led him through another hallway into a side chamber adjoining the main hall.
From there, he could see part of the grand dining room.
Already being arranged with ornate cutlery, gold-trimmed goblets, and dishes being placed in perfect order.
"This is your station," the head maid said, pointing to a small corner beside one of the carved pillars.
"You'll serve wine to the guests seated at this end of the table. Only speak when spoken to. Keep your head slightly bowed. And whatever you do—don't spill anything."
Her tone was clipped, no-nonsense.
"If anything goes wrong, it won't be me or the others who take the fall. It'll be you."
Then, without waiting for a response, she turned and disappeared.
Just as silence settled again—
A translucent blue panel popped in front of him.
[Host is advised to not act arrogantly today. Obey orders. And complete your task.]
Alaric stared at it for a moment, then exhaled through his nose.
"Yeah, yeah," he muttered under his breath, just loud enough for himself.
"I know."
His expression didn't shift much, but his hands clenched slightly at his sides.
[Just one night. Play the role. It's much better than being a slave]
Alaric gave a nod and closed his eyes, exhaling deeply.
Minutes passed as the finishing touches were being placed in the grand hall.
The scent of roasted meats and seasoned herbs mingled in the air.
Alaric stood still, silent, eyes calmly scanning everything.
Then Selene returned.
Click! Click!
Her heels clicked with a crisp rhythm, her presence enough to make the maids quicken their pace.
She moved through the hall with quiet authority, inspecting arrangements, issuing sharp instructions to the maids and servants.
"Straighten those goblets. No, not like that—tilt it slightly.
Adjust the tablecloth, fix the centerpiece, change the wine." Her voice was calm yet authoritive.
Before she could finish her rounds.
Thump!
The front doors slammed open.
Baron Ferick Glimor had returned.
He stumbled inside, reeking of liquor and cheap perfume, his coat barely hanging off one shoulder.
"Hah!" he laughed, swaying slightly. His bloodshot eyes swept across the room, then narrowed when they landed on Alaric.
He stumbled forward.
"Who the hell is this?" he slurred, pointing a finger toward Alaric.
"What? You the gigolo that bitch brought in behind my back?"
His voice echoed across the hall, sharp and venomous.
Before Alaric could even blink, Selene was there.
"He's one of the slaves you purchased two weeks ago, husband. We're short on staff today, so I temporarily placed him in service." She said smoothly, her voice calm.
The baron squinted at her, then laughed bitterly.
"Tch. Sounds just like you," he sneered.
Selene didn't flinch.
She simply smiled—a tight, polite smile. "You should prepare. Our guests will be arriving soon."
The baron scoffed and turned to Alaric. "Don't screw anything up, boy. One mistake and you'll wish you were never born."
Then he stumbled away, cursing under his breath.
As soon as he disappeared down the hall,
Selene's composed expression cracked.
Her fists clenched at her sides as she muttered through gritted teeth.
"Filthy pig."
Then, she turned and took a slow step toward Alaric and whispered so only he could hear.
"No matter what happens—ruin tonight's dinner."
Alaric blinked. "...Pardon?"
"Spill the wine. Drop a dish. I don't care how. Just make sure something goes wrong."
Then, without waiting for a response, Selene turned and moved away like nothing had happened.
Alaric watched her go.
Clik! Clik!
The faint echo of her heels fading down the corridor.
He already knew their relationship was strained.
But now, she was asking him to sabotage a formal dinner. In public. With nobles.
This wasn't just some petty act.
It wouldn't fall on her. Not directly. And certainly not on Alaric—he was just a slave, a servant. Replaceable.
No… the one whose image would shatter under the weight of that humiliation was Ferick Glimor himself.
His pride.
His reputation.
His already crumbling standing in the noble circle.
Alaric's lips curled into a slow, knowing smirk.
"You really hate him that much," he muttered under his breath. "Though… I'm not surprised. With the kind of bastard he is."
