They ended up playing the game for the rest of the journey until Hermione announced glancing at her watch. "We should change; we must be getting close to Hogsmeade."
They all took turns going into the loo to get changed. The other boys made Draco wait until last because he always took so long.
By the time Draco had changed into his school robes and come back the train was starting to slow down in preparation for coming into the Hogsmeade Station. As it was last year, the rain had been coming down hard, leaving the weather chilly and damp.
As they got off, they saw Hagrid waving a huge lantern and calling, "Firs' yers, firs' yers! All firs' yers over here ta me!"
The rest of the students headed for the carriages while the first years followed Hagrid to the boats. The ride up to the castle was bumpy and Harry wondered what was pulling the carriages. That seem to be the main topic of the ride and even Hermione didn't know.
Neville seemed unperturbed by the carriages. "They're being pulled by Thestrals. Gran warned me I'd be able to see them last year because I saw my granddad die and that's the only way you can see them. They're kind of scary looking. They look like horse skeletons with wings and they're black.
"Thestrals," Hermione repeated to herself and Harry knew as soon as they reached the common room she would be searching the books there for any mention of them.
They all sat at their house table for the Welcome Feast. Once the Sorting was over, Ravenclaw had four new members. One of them was a rather strange looking girl with nearly bum-length white blond hair and silvery eyes. She looked uncertain about where to sit, but Harry extended his hand and said, "You can sit here."
Luna sat down smiling at Harry. "Thank you."
"It's nice to meet you; I'm Harry Evans-Snape by the way."
"I'm Luna…Luna Lovegood."
They watched the rest of the Sorting and finally Professor McGonagall called the last name to be sorted, "Weasley, Ginny."
Ginny sat down on the stool and put the hat on her head. Harry could see the rest of the Weasleys at the Gryffindor table looking expectantly at her when the hat suddenly said, "Well, better be Ravenclaw then!"
Ginny took the hat off her head, placed it on the stool and then went and sat down next to Luna, ignoring the dumbstruck looks from her brothers. "You were right. It worked," Ginny said. "I told it I wanted to in Ravenclaw instead of Gryffindor because I didn't want to be in the same house as all my brothers."
"My father said it works unless there's a bad infestation of Duglaboos," Luna answered.
"What are Duglaboos?" Harry asked curiously.
"They cause our minds to go completely blank and then the Hat has trouble sorting people into the right houses," Luna replied airily as if everybody knew what she was talking about. "If you eat a lot of dirigible plums, you'll never have to worry about them though. They hate dirigible plums."
"I'll have to remember that," Harry replied. He tuned out Dumbledore's welcoming speech and waited for the food to appear.
"My father will probably send me a package of them when they ripen and I'll share them with you," she replied.
"Thank you, Luna."
Hermione who was sitting on the other side of Harry nudged him and then whispered, "You do know there is no such thing as a Duglaboo."
Harry shrugged. Everybody had their little quirks.
"As you've all heard and the Prophet has been joyously printing; Voldemort will not be returning…" He held up his hand. "But do not fool yourselves into believing his influence is dead also. There is another Dark Lord waiting to rise and as before I will be here and ready to fight him!"
Severus rolled his eyes and quickly looked down at his plate.
"Headmaster, if you're done," Minerva said quietly. "Please summon the food; I believe everyone is hungry."
Dumbledore blinked and then replied, "Of course." He clapped his hands and said, "Let the feast begin!"
There was the expected "Ahh!" and the stunned looks on the faces of the first years especially the Muggleborns at the sight of so much food and such a variety too.
Lily was sitting next to Severus and nudged him. He looked at her, eyebrows raised. Lily leaned in a bit and whispered, "I think after the feast, you and I need to visit the headmaster and have a discussion about what he told Potter."
Severus nodded with a grin on his face when he realized what discussion meant with Lily. "I believe you are right." He filled his plate with two of the deliciously prepared pork chops, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and green beans. "I will need to greet my new snakes and go over the house rules first, but I should be free after that. I will stop by your quarters when I am done."
Lily smirked too, knowing Severus understood her reference.
After the desserts vanished from the tables, Dumbledore stood to give the same speech he'd been giving since Severus had been a student. Did the man ever even think about changing it even a bit?
The Head Boy and Girl, again both Gryffindors, stood and called for the Prefects to lead the first years to their houses.
Severus slipped out the door behind the head table and headed down to his office inside Slytherin House where he waited until the seventh year Prefects told him that everybody was assembled in the common room.
