Dudley stood in front of Harry and offered his hand. "I'm sorry, too, Harry. After mum and dad talked with me last night I thought about all the awful things I did. The 'Harry hunting,' threatening the other kids at school so they wouldn't be friends with you, and blaming you for the bad things I did so mum and dad would punish you for it. I really am interested in you being a wizard and that school you go to sounds awesome. I hope you'll forgive me too and maybe you'll tell me what it's like to do magic."
Harry shook Dudley's hand. "Sure, Dudley I can forgive you too. I know you were following your parents lead with no idea it was wrong."
Dudley grinned. "My friends call me 'Big D'."
"Well, Big D, maybe you can teach me how to play some of those computer games. I always thought they looked like they would be a lot of fun."
"Well, enjoy the canapés and I'll get dinner on the table," Petunia said briskly. "Vernon, Dudley, I can use some help."
Harry sat back down on the couch, took one of the sodas and one of the canapés which were cheddar, apple and pickle pasties and took a bite of it. "Mmm …dad, mum, you should try one of these," Harry said.
Severus took one of the glasses of wine and one of the pasties. He took a bite and nodded in agreement. "Yes, delicious."
"Tuney always was the better cook of the two of us," Lily said. "But this is really good."
Dinner started off with a Yorkshire Pudding containing thick brown gravy followed by roasted pork with sweet apple sauce to pour over it, whipped potatoes, peas and caramelized onions, and Apple pie with vanilla ice cream for dessert.
Watching the amounts of food both Vernon and Dudley put away, Severus was not surprised to see that they were well on their way to resembling zeppelins. When Petunia went into the kitchen to get dessert, Severus offered to help her.
Once they were in the kitchen, Severus cast his Muffliato spell, took the shrunken box out of his pocket and resized it. "Petunia, I have brewed a diet potion for Vernon and Dudley. They are drastically overweight and headed for major health problems or early death if they don't lose some weight. This is colorless as you can see as well odorless and tasteless. All you need do is pour it into their drinks or over their food and they will never know they are taking it, but it will control their appetites by making them feel full more quickly. I know you cannot control what Dudley eats at school so you may have to wait for the holidays to start him on it."
Petunia nodded. "I know their weight is dangerous and I've gotten notes from the school nurse at Smeltings about Dudley's increasing weight, but it hard to supervise their eating when they don't see the necessity for it. I will use your potion for Vernon and see what happens, but I will probably need more of it by the time school is out."
"You might also want to visit your family doctor and they can probably refer you to a dietician for meal plans. Once the weight comes off, you will want to keep it off."
Petunia nodded and they returned to the dining room carrying trays containing the dessert. Once Dudley and Harry finished dessert which in Dudley's case consisted of two large slices of pie with ice cream, he asked, "Mum, can Harry and me be excused so we can go to my room?"
"If it's alright with your Aunt Lily and Severus, it's alright with me."
"May I dad, mum please?" Harry pleaded.
"Go ahead, Harry," Severus replied with a smile. And Lily nodded too.
Harry and Dudley headed upstairs with Dudley telling Harry about the new computer game he'd just gotten.
Lily helped Petunia clear the table leaving Severus to talk with Vernon. Vernon cleared his throat awkwardly and asked, "So what kind of work do you do, Severus?"
"I am a Potion Master and Professor of Potions at Hogwarts. In addition I am Head of Slytherin House, a certified Medi-Wizard and a certified Wardsmith. I also brew all of the potions for the Hogwarts Infirmary."
"What is a Medi-Wizard and a Wardsmith?"
"A Medi-Wizard or Medi-Witch is something like a paramedic in your culture, but with much more authority and a Wardsmith spells homes, offices, businesses or many other things by placing special protective spells around them to protect against harm or being cursed for instance."
"I see; it's rather like a burglary alarm or one of those smoke or carbon monoxide alarms."
"Yes, very similar," Severus agreed.
"It sounds as if you must be very busy."
Severus nodded. "Yes. I will be for the next four weeks with final exams coming up, grading the exams and getting my final grades in to Dumbledore and then making sure all the children get on the Hogwarts Express safely. As Head of House that is one of my duties. Not to mention proctoring OWLs and NEWTs the first two weeks in June. The fifth years take the OWLs. They determine what you will be studying the next two years and the seventh years take NEWTs which may determine what career you might pursue, depending how many you have and what your scores are. Those two weeks are generally very tense."
Vernon shook his head. "I don't think I could wear that many hats. I am a mid-level manager for Grunnings. We make all sorts of drills and drill bits for homes and businesses. Some of our major clients are construction companies that build all over the world. We have Research and Development department to design special kinds of drills and drill bits for different kinds of surfaces and soils."
"Very impressive," Severus said, nodding.
"Petunia says you grew up in a normal environment."
