Chapter 33 - Voices Behind the Door

While the conversation continued in the bedroom, outside, the sound of an engine was heard. Cid had just arrived. He parked his car, turned off the ignition, grabbed his keys, then walked calmly toward the house.

When he opened the front door, a slight frown marked his brow. He thought he'd heard... voices?

The further he walked, the more this impression was confirmed. Muffled voices. One clear, calm. The other more lively. They seemed to be coming from Mia's room.

Intrigued, he approached quietly. When he arrived at the door, he recognized without a shadow of a doubt two voices. His heart sped up slightly. He didn't think twice.

He suddenly opened the door and entered.

"Mia? Who are you talking to?" he asked, still surprised by his own actions.

But what he saw left him speechless.

Mia was alone. Sitting calmly on her bed, her gaze raised towards him. She seemed a little flustered at first, but when she realized Fran was gone, she immediately recovered.

"I don't know what you're talking about, Cid. As you can see, I'm alone."

Cid blinked, unsettled.

"Yet... I was sure I heard someone else... two voices, even."

"Perhaps you heard my phone conversation?" Mia replied, showing him her phone lying beside her. "I was talking to a friend."

She then got up from the bed with a small smile, erasing any trace of embarrassment.

"You must be exhausted from your day. You should take a nice bath while I prepare something to eat," she suggested with an innocent smile.

Cid looked at her for a few seconds without saying anything, then sighed. Finally, a smile tugged at his lips.

"Okay, you're probably right."

Mia, relieved, walked past him and quickly left the room.

Cid was about to do the same when his gaze was caught by a detail on the bed.

A tray. Two plates. Two glasses.

He froze. For a moment, doubt crept into his mind.

But he said nothing.

He simply left the room, carefully closed the door behind him, and then went to take his bath.

Later that evening, they ate dinner together in a peaceful atmosphere. Everything seemed normal, almost too calm. Then they each returned to their rooms for the night.

But Cid couldn't help but think back to the two glasses.
