Chapter 24 - A not very friendly meeting

Year: 1419 AD

Caesarian Empire

Dodo Island

It was another sunny summer day when a ship with a cross as its standard and a strange flag on top and this made the population that was celebrating the traditional Dodo festival, so they fled to their homes and a signal was lit, thus the pirate invasion alarm was given.

In the caravel, the Portuguese navigators João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira they saw through their telescope the population leaving the beach and one of the crew said:

"Esses devem ser igual aos guanches, devemos ter cuidado com eles, eles são muitos perigosos." said a crew member.

The crew's eyes widened as they saw iron cannons placed on the beach by soldiers wearing Roman-style attire and carrying a flag of a gigantic eagle fluttering, This sudden change caused chaos among the crew, but navigator João Gonçalves Zarco, to put an end to the chaos, ordered:

"Homens, não se deixem levar por causa deles possuírem tais armas, nossos canhões vão destroçar eles! Girem a bombordo e mirem os canhões no defensores daquela ilha! Por El Rey Infante Henrique!!!" ordered João.

The crew then moved the bronze cannons to the right side and the caravel that was previously on the left side, moved to the right side, but the Caesarian defenders gave a cannon salute, destroying parts of the caravel and soon after iron cannonballs explode in the caravel and everyone jumps into the sea.

All the crew of the caravel arrive on the beach and find soldiers armed with arquebuses and revolvers and their leader emerged and said:

"You pirates have given the Caesarian Empire a lot of trouble. This is the thirtieth time since 1407 that you have tried to plunder our island. Our Emperor Leo V did not want to come into contact with the European kingdoms, but now it was a point of no return, we will no longer remain neutral when invasions are made to our territory, we are going after the European kingdoms that are sending pirates to our territory, get ready for retaliation from our navy." says the leader of the defenders.

João and Tristão their eyes widened when they heard the leader of the island's defenders speak Latin, but a Latin different from Ecclesiastical Latin, something more like an evolution of late Latin than Ecclesiastical Latin, then João gets up and tries to say something in late Latin but because of his strange accent, a soldier hits João on the head with a gun and the other crew members are being arrested and taken somewhere.

Kingdom of Portugal

Lisbon

Ribeira Pier

Following the repercussions of the pirate attack on Dodo Island, Emperor Leo V and the Caesarian Senate revoked the Lex Marcus Agrippa and in response a naval fleet led by Prince Paulus and the Classis Nova Romanorum, Ulysses Theodosius, his younger brother, about 5 ships Romulus Omega, 10 ships Romulus Alpha and 20 Trireme Agrippa, totaling about 105 thousand sailors for a response for Portuguese piracy and as proof of their naval strength, they would attack the capital of the Kingdom of Portugal, Lisbon.

Amidst the loud sound of vendors and the strong smell of salty sea water, a Portuguese nobleman was waiting for his family to get off the ship, when he saw on the horizon gigantic ships fluttering in a flag of a golden phoenix and he was amazed at the size of the ship which was bigger than a caravel and he shouted:

"Os turcos estão invadindo o nosso reino!!! Fujam daqui e avisem a Dom Infante Henrique!!!" he shouted.

Soon everyone saw more gigantic ships appear on the horizon and this made the population flee the port and begin to spread the news of a Turkish invasion of the Portuguese capital.

Meanwhile, on the main ship of the Caesarian naval fleet, the Nova Lutetia, were Princes Paulus and Ulysses Theodosius, both of whom were arguing about what to do if they were to bombard the capital or send an emissary to attempt a non-aggression treaty, Ulysses then says:

"These scoundrels must know who they are dealing with! We must bombard their capital to show the strength of the Romans over these Celtiberians! If they had the nerve to try to sack Dodo Island, Let's see if they have the courage to defend the capital of their kingdom!" says Ulysses.

Paulus trying to maintain a more diplomatic position, he says:

"We must send an emissary to speak to their king and resolve this problem, before it gets out of our control and turns into an all-out war, if we reach peace it will be a great achievement, but if it fails use your way to solve the problem." says Paulus.

Meanwhile, in the city of Lisbon, Portuguese soldiers brought bronze cannons to the port and began the Portuguese attack, thus the Battle of Lisbon began.

Cannonballs hit Romulus's colossal ships, with that Ulysses looked at Paulus and said:

"They chose war, now they will see who they are up against! Now there is no turning back, this city will be taken and their king will have to make the most humiliating apology possible, these Celtiberians will get what they deserve!" says Ulysses.

Ulysses turned and ordered the captains of the other ships:

"Romulus Alpha and Omega ships, destroy the bronze cannons that are in that port and then we will destroy their navy, the Trireme Agrippa must conquer that port and take areas of the city, for now, these are my orders." orders Ulysses.

A hail of cannonballs hit the port and destroyed any chance of defending the city, a dozen of Agrippa's Triremes arrive at the port and control that place.

St. George's Castle

A few hours ago

The King of Portugal was in his room talking to a Portuguese nobleman who came to ask for an audience with him about problems with corsair pirates, but a soldier came running and said:

"El Rey Dom Infante Henrique! Os turcos estão invadindo Lisboa!" says the soldier.

The Portuguese King was not quite believing it, until he heard the sounds of cannons from afar and knowing the fame of the Turks with their cannons, he took a deep breath and said:

"O dia mais temível chegou, os turcos não se contentaram em só tomar os territórios dos imperadores gregos, ao que parece, teremos que nos unir com os Reinos de Castela e Aragão para uma guerra contra os turcos. Não irei me esmorecer diante de tal inimigo, o mundo saberá da força que é o nosso reino, vou mostrar a esses infiéis do que um português é feito, chamem todos os conselheiros de guerra, estamos sob uma invasão turca e qualquer coisa será essencial para a defesa da cidade." says Henrique.

The soldier leaves the hall and the Portuguese king hears more cannon shots spreading throughout Lisbon, while he did not meet with the war advisors, he remained listening to the nobleman's complaint.

After a few minutes, the war councilors arrived and the nobleman was forced to leave the hall, while the war councilors were astonished by the cannon shots that could be heard from afar and the Portuguese king asked:

"A Nossa capital está sendo atacada pelos turcos, nossas carracas, galés estão em Porto, a nossa estimada caravela está protegendo nossas rotas no Mar Mediterrâneo contra os mouros, corsários e turcos, qual decisão devo tomar?" Henrique asked.

The war advisors were completely terrified by the cannon shots that kept firing, but one of them stepped forward and replied:

The Portuguese King, seeing that he didn't have much to choose from, said:

"Envie um nobre da corte para fazer a paz com os turcos e diga a ele para ser o mais respeitoso possível quando for falar do Sultão Murad II, é o máximo que posso fazer." says Henrique.

The same counselor who proposed such a thing, was willing to go and talk to the Turks and as he was the only one who knew something of the Turkish language, then he was sent to talk to the Turks.

St. George's Castle

Now

It was already night in Lisbon when the Portuguese king was in the hall with his advisors waiting for some news, when the gate opened and there was the advisor and two other people coming with him.

The counselor then bows before his king and says:

"El Rey Dom Infante Henrique, vossa Majestade não imagina o quão forte são esses dois, eu só tenho uma coisa a dizer: É melhor Vossa Majestade se curvar diante deles ou nosso reino pode ser varrido da existência." says the counselor.

Ulysses, with a look exuding anger, unsheathes his Syrian steel sword and says:

"I, as a Caesarian prince, demand that the pirate attacks on Lusitania cease or we will conquer Lusitania!" says Ulysses.

The Portuguese King was confused when he heard a different Latin than that spoken in Europe, so he remembered the legend of the Sons of Theodosius, the Western Romans who ventured into new lands, thus he asks in medieval Latin:

"Are you the Sons of Theodosius?" asks Henrique.

Ulysses was about to answer but Paulus stepped forward and replied:

"I am Prince Paulus Theodosius Junior and this one with brown wavy hair is my younger brother, Ulysses Theodosius Magnus, Classis Nova Romanorum and I am the Dux of New Antioch of the New Anatolia region, he is very imperative in his decisions, the best thing you can do is to establish a non-aggression pact and avoid a bloody war of conquest, that is your only choice or the Caesarian army and navy will destroy stone under stone that exists in this kingdom." Paulus replies.

The Portuguese King was shocked by such a revelation because for many, this was just a legend of exoteric copyist monks and Greek monks, so he responded:

"I honestly didn't expect you to exist, but seeing such a revelation I accept the non-aggression treaty, it's the only thing I can do now." responds Henrique.

Paulus then claps his hands and a man enters the hall carrying a strange machine for the eyes of the Portuguese King, then Paulus says:

"Write in the Escribum, Treaty of Lusitania: 1st The king of the Lusitanians will pay about 2 tons of gold, 2nd The Caesarian Empire returns the Portuguese prisoners who were on Dodo Island to Lusitania, 3° A forty-year peace agreement will be made and if it is broken before then it will result in a war, 4° The Caesarian Empire makes the Lusitanians a foederati and any attack on them will be an attack on the Caesarian Empire and 5th The North African trade routes of the Lusitanians will be protected by the Caesarian navy and the Lusitanian market will be opened to the Caesarian market." says Paulus.

After a few minutes the treaty was made and the Portuguese king wrote his name on the paper to seal the agreement, which despite being an insult was what the Portuguese had to do at that moment, any kingdom in Europe would be easily humiliated by the Caesarian Empire, so this agreement would be very relevant in the future, especially in the Luso-Ottoman war in the 16th century.

This was the first contact of the Iberian peoples after centuries, now they felt what it was like to be a true Roman and soon other peoples felt what it would be like to face the Caesarian Empire.
