Chapter 28 - Chapter 28 : Yinou

The forest around Su Ning and Bai Lin seemed alive, its thick trees casting long shadows that swallowed the light. Every rustle in the bushes felt like it added to the weight of their growing worry as they searched for any sign of Yinou. It had been a week since she disappeared, and with each passing hour, hope seemed to fade, like a fire burning out.

"Su Ning, we've searched the whole forest. We should think about going back to camp," Bai Lin said, his voice tight with frustration.

"No. We can't stop," Su Ning replied, his voice full of determination. "She wouldn't just leave us."

Bai Lin gritted his teeth as they reached a clearing. The sound of a nearby stream only made things feel more surreal, as if the peaceful sound mocked their frustration. They stopped to catch their breath, their minds filled with doubt. Bai Lin bent forward, putting his hands on his knees and sighed heavily.

"What if something happened to her?" he asked quietly, the fear hanging in the air. "This forest isn't kind."

Su Ning's eyes narrowed in focus. He couldn't give in to fear. "We can't think like that. What if she's waiting for us? What if she needs us?" His voice wavered with uncertainty, but he fought to stay strong.

"We also need to think about Mrs. Xiao," Bai Lin said suddenly, breaking their focus. "Why is she pushing so hard to join the search? She barely knew Yinou."

"I don't trust her," Su Ning admitted, his words low and filled with doubt. "It's just... a feeling. Forget it."

Bai Lin nodded thoughtfully. "We should stay alert. But right now, we need to find Yinou, before it's too late."

They kept moving, hearts heavy not just from the weight of their mission but from the fear of what might happen if they failed.

Meanwhile, in a place far from their search, Yinou found herself in a strange, dark sea, its waters blood-red and glowing under a pale, ghostly moon. The water pressed against her, dragging her down, and she struggled to stay afloat, panic rising in her chest. But the sea didn't care. Shadows circled her, dark shapes of creatures and spirits, their forms blurry but all too familiar.

"You owe us," they hissed, their voices echoing. "You owe us for what he did."

Yinou's heart sank. These spirits were the souls of the people her brother, Zhang Li, had sacrificed to keep her alive over the years. Memories rushed back--her childhood, full of brief moments of happiness, but always tainted by the dark reality of their past.

The first thing she remembered was her mother. Yinou had always been her mother's favorite...the child born in sorrow, compared to Zhang Li, who carried the burden of their family's painful history. Yinou was the result of her mother's painful past, a legacy of trauma that had driven her mother to hide away from the world. Their family had been forced to live in hiding, among mortals, trying to escape from what they really were.

Even though he seemed cold, Zhang Li never really ignored Yinou. He just kept his distance, not wanting to drag her into the painful truth of their shared past. But deep down, he loved her more than words could express. He knew she was the only one who ever truly cared for him, despite all the suffering.

"Why do you still fight to live?" a voice boomed among the spirits. "You are stained by your brother's sacrifices."

"Sacrifices made so you could survive, a demon among immortals and humans," another voice added, filled with bitterness.

Yinou's heart ached as she remembered their time together--sharing secret moments, hiding from a world that rejected them. Zhang Li had always protected her, carrying burdens too heavy for a child. She remembered nights of cheap meals, the thin walls of their home, the wind howling outside, drowning out their cries.

But her mother's favoritism had caused a rift. "Mother, why do you love Yinou more?" Zhang Li had once asked, his voice full of pain. "Why do you make me feel like I'm nothing?"

It had taken Yinou years to understand what was going on in Zhang Li's heart--the confusion, the hurt. The day he left to chase a fleeting love had broken their fragile world. The humans had betrayed them, tearing their family apart.

Then came the moment that haunted them both, his decision to sacrifice Yinou's life for a chance at redemption. Even surrounded by the spirits of those who had been harmed, Yinou still felt love for the brother who had always clung to hope for her.

But those memories began to fade, lost in the swirling sea, as the spirits demanded payment for her existence. "You must face the truth, Yinou. You must pay for your life."

In that moment, a voice rang out in her mind, Zhang Li's voice. "I saved you for a reason. You deserve to live, Yinou. You always have."

His words cut through the silence, and a spark of defiance lit inside her. "I won't drown!" she shouted, her voice strong. "I will fight!" The darkness tried to pull her in, promising power and freedom, but she met it with unwavering resolve. "I won't pay the price!"

At that moment, Yinou realized something important: the virtues she had always held onto were just illusions, hiding the storm inside her. Why should she seek redemption when the darkness offered freedom? She felt the pull of chaos, calling her to embrace her true self.

With every heartbeat, her defiance grew stronger, burning brighter against the darkness. "You think I'm afraid?" she growled, her voice low but filled with power. "You think I want your salvation?" The air around her crackled with her newfound strength, as she finally accepted the chaos within.

She realized now there was no redemption to seek... only the path back to herself, free from shame or regret. The darkness grinned, and for the first time, she welcomed it, knowing that within it lay her true awakening.
