Chapter 13 - Ch 13 - First Game

The day of the match arrived with a palpable energy that hummed through the gymnasium.

The stands were packed and filled with students, all eager to witness the match.

Excitement and nerves danced in the players' eyes.

Amir was fidgeting, cracking his knuckles repeatedly, while Marcus stretched with laser focus.

Ryan, as always, carried an air of confidence, even if the tension in his jaw gave him away.

Jen smiled nervously, her gaze flitting toward the stands as she scanned for familiar faces.

Meanwhile, Kaito remained calm, his expression composed as he gazed across the court, anticipation gleaming in his eyes.

He thrived on challenges, and today, one of the biggest awaited him.

A murmur swept through the crowd as the opposing team strode into the gymnasium. Lakeside High had arrived.

Their entrance was commanding, the players exuding an aura that immediately drew attention.

Dressed in striking blue uniforms, they carried themselves with an ease that only dominance could bring.

Their star player, Henderson—a towering figure with an intense gaze—strolled at the front of the pack, a predator assessing its prey.

Behind him was Jordan, the team's quicksilver point guard with lightning-fast reflexes, twirling a ball effortlessly on his finger as though he couldn't be bothered to take the match seriously.

At his side was Derrick, the enforcer—a powerhouse forward with broad shoulders and a reputation for being merciless under the rim.

Rounding out their core was Vincent, a lanky, sharp-eyed shooting guard known for sinking threes from impossible distances, and Trevor, the brain of the team, his knack for strategic plays often left opponents scrambling.

Whispers broke out among the spectators.

"That's Henderson… He's huge."

"I heard he can dunk from the free-throw line!"

"Jordan's handles are insane. He could juke anyone out of their shoes."

"They don't even look worried… Do we even stand a chance?"

The murmurs reached Kaito and his friends on the bench.

Amir swallowed hard, his eyes darting nervously between the blue-clad players. Marcus grunted, rolling his neck.

"They put their jerseys on one leg at a time like we do," He muttered to himself, though his voice lacked conviction.

Jen jabbed him playfully in the ribs.

"Legs?" She teased, trying to lighten the mood. "Pretty sure you mean pants."

"Whatever," Marcus grumbled, earning a chuckle from Ryan, who was adjusting his headband.

"Yo, is that their rookie?" Derrick said loudly from the Lakeside side of the court, pointing toward Kaito with a lazy grin. "What's the matter, kid? Your knees look like they're about to buckle. Don't tell me this is your first real game."

Kaito didn't flinch. Instead, he turned his head just slightly, locking eyes with Derrick for a long, deliberate moment. Then, with the smallest tilt of his lips, he responded coolly, "Just making sure you enjoy yourself before I shut you down."

A ripple of "oooohs" spread through the crowd as Derrick raised his eyebrows in mock surprise.

"This one's got some bite!" He said, laughing as he high-fived Jordan.

At center court, the two coaches met with a handshake, exchanging polite greetings that belied the intense competition brewing beneath the surface.

Then came the players' introductions.

Cheers mixed with scattered gasps as Henderson stepped forward, his very presence commanding awe.

When Kaito's name was called, he took his place with his teammates, the glint in his eyes now sharper, bolder. There was no fear, no doubt—only excitement.

The referee's whistle blew, cutting through the tension and signaling the teams to the center court. Ryan exchanged a tense handshake with Henderson, who leaned in just slightly.

"Hope you've got health insurance, captain," Henderson drawled before stepping back into position.

The crowd hushed. The referee stepped into the circle, holding the ball aloft. For a moment, time seemed to stand still. Then the whistle blew again, and the ball shot into the air.

Henderson leaped, his height and power making it look almost effortless as he tipped the ball toward Jordan. Lakeside sprang into action with a precision that was mesmerizing to watch, their passes crisp and their movements fluid.

Within seconds, Jordan darted past Amir, a blur of motion, and fed the ball to Derrick. The forward powered past Marcus, charging toward the hoop like a freight train, and Henderson was there to receive the pass, finishing with an easy layup.

The scoreboard flashed: 2-0.

The crowd erupted as Lakeside scored the first basket effortlessly, asserting their dominance from the outset.

Amir ran a hand through his hair, muttering, "Damn, they're fast."

"Eyes up!" Ryan barked, clapping his hands sharply. "This is just the start. Focus up, team!"

He ordered to tighten up their defense. The tension on their side was undeniable. But in the midst of it all, Kaito was... smiling. Not forced or out of nerves, but a genuine, wide grin that only deepened as he turned to face Henderson.

"This," He thought, his blood rushing in exhilaration, "is exactly what I've been waiting for."

Across the court, Henderson grinned, turning to Kaito. "You sure this is what you signed up for? Don't tell me you're already regretting showing up."

Kaito stepped into position to inbound the ball, his grip firm, his posture steady. He glanced up at Henderson, his own smirk forming as he said, "I was hoping you'd at least make me sweat. Don't disappoint me now."

The response caught Henderson off guard for a split second before he laughed, clapping his hands in mock applause. "Alright, Rookie. Let's see what you've got."

Kaito's pulse quickened—not from nerves, but from exhilaration. As the ball was passed in, his mind sharpened, focusing like a blade honed for battle.

The game was on!

The crowd leaned forward, anticipation hanging thick in the air. The fast pace, the fiery determination, the battle of wills—this was what Kaito lived for.

And as he gripped the ball at the top of the key, his movements slow but deliberate, Kaito locked eyes with Derrick, who crouched low, ready to guard.

The crowd tensed, anticipation thick in the air.

With a sudden, lightning-quick jab to the right, Kaito's shoulder dropped, his entire body selling the feint.

Derrick bit, lunging to block the path—but in a flash, Kaito spun left with explosive speed, his footwork so precise it seemed to glide, leaving Derrick stumbling off balance, arms flailing to recover.

The crowd erupted as Kaito surged toward the basket.

The roar of the gym built to a fever pitch, the suspense unbearable.

This was it.

The battle had just begun.
