Before entering his mother's office, Captain Hunter took a deep breath and calmed his heart.
The doors slid open at the moment he pressed the alert for the doorlock with a silent thud.
'1, 2, 3, 4, 5…' He breathed slowly and walked across the room, feigning confidence.
His mother was seated at her desk. At first he thought her expression appeared calm and nonchalant but as he approached he noted the tightness of her jaw when she lifted her round, hazel eyes to meet his face.
His mother rarely looked Kit in the eyes, and even now she appeared to focus on a spot just below them as she nodded for him to stand across from her.
"Mother, I - " Kit began, but she held up her hand for him to stop and her eyes narrowed.
