Chapter 217 - Chapter 217: Bounty Ninja

Seeing that Aomi had instantly seen through his genjutsu, Yūgui decided not to waste any more chakra and ended the technique. Gradually, the eerie laughter in the area faded away.

At this moment, the Konoha chunin lowered their hands, though their expressions still showed lingering fear. Aomi, however, remained calm and composed. He didn't rush to attack but instead looked at Yūgui and asked again, "Why are you targeting me?"

"Why? Of course, it's for the money!" Yūgui replied bluntly, without hiding anything. "Someone has placed a bounty on your head in the black market, and I'm just the first to come after you."

"Black market?" Aomi muttered, "So it's bounty hunters, after all."

In fact, Aomi had already guessed this when he noticed that Yūgui and his group bore no signs of being affiliated with any ninja village and didn't dress like ANBU. He had also guessed the identity of the one behind the bounty.

If he wasn't mistaken, it was likely Ōnoki. That man always liked to rely on external forces to solve problems for his village. Even the Akatsuki's rise to power later owed much to Ōnoki's support.

Thus, using bounty hunters to eliminate him seemed entirely in line with Ōnoki's style.

Aomi had another piece of evidence. This area was deep within a battlefield, heavily guarded. It would be impossible for anyone to slip through without the help of either Konoha or Iwagakure.

Could it have been Konoha?

Highly unlikely. Even Danzo wouldn't move against him in the current situation. At the very least, they'd wait until he had served his purpose.

So, it had to be Iwagakure!

But... "The Ghost Corpse Clan? What exactly is that?"

Aomi was puzzled. Whether in his past life or this one, he had never heard of such a clan. The name suggested it might be a bloodline clan, but he had no recollection of it.

There were only two possibilities: either this was a small, unknown clan, and their so-called "greatness" was self-aggrandizement, or they were a clan that was wiped out during this war and thus vanished from history.

Wait...

Aomi thought of a third possibility: this clan might not exist at all, and the "Ghost Corpse Clan" was entirely fabricated.

With this in mind, Aomi activated his Sharingan, carefully observing Yūgui and the people behind him.

Sensing Aomi's gaze, Yūgui, whether out of guilt or for some other reason, gave no further explanation. Instead, he immediately ordered his group to attack.

Aomi didn't move. It was his subordinates who first engaged the attackers, while he stood quietly, watching their every move.

The Konoha chunin quickly found themselves at a disadvantage.

The reason was simple: these enemies didn't fear injury. As their clan name suggested, they attacked with suicidal ferocity, throwing themselves at the Konoha shinobi.

The Konoha chunin had never encountered such a tactic and were caught off guard. From there, they were almost entirely overwhelmed.

Aomi observed that even without resorting to suicidal tactics, these enemies were stronger than average chunin. If they didn't care about their own lives, a group of them could even hold off an average jōnin.

But Aomi wasn't sure if they had any other tricks up their sleeves.

As he pondered this, one of the enemy shinobi was caught by a Konoha chunin, who managed to stab a kunai into his jaw, piercing up into his brain.

Before the chunin could celebrate, the enemy's face contorted into an eerie grin.

Suddenly, the man's body began to swell, as if he were about to explode. Strange curse markings appeared across his skin, and a sense of impending danger filled the air.

The Konoha chunin immediately began retreating, but it was too late.

Just as the explosion was about to occur, Aomi appeared beside the chunin. He grabbed the man's arm, and with a swift kick, propelled them both far from the explosion site.

Boom!

The enemy self-destructed, sending black blood mixed with fragments of flesh and bone flying in all directions, covering a ten-meter radius.

When the dust settled, the area around the explosion was riddled with holes from the bone fragments, as if the earth itself had been shredded.

It was easy to imagine the danger anyone in that zone would have faced.

After setting the Konoha chunin down, Aomi turned his wary gaze toward Yūgui. The self-destruction technique was indeed dangerous.

And...

Aomi's eyes swept across the surroundings.

From the woods around them, numerous figures began to emerge, silently surrounding them.

The Konoha chunin hurriedly disengaged from their battles and regrouped around Aomi. One of them whispered, "Captain, what should we do?"

"What should we do?" Yūgui sneered, not waiting for Aomi to answer. "My target is Uchiha Aomi. If you know what's good for you, you'll step aside."

Though they knew Yūgui was trying to sow discord, the Konoha chunin couldn't help glancing at Aomi out of the corner of their eyes.

But Aomi's expression hadn't changed from beginning to end. He glanced at Yūgui and then at the surrounding figures.

"These... are all you, aren't they?" Aomi said calmly.

"What do you mean?" Yūgui feigned ignorance.

But no matter how well he pretended, he couldn't fool Aomi's eyes. The moment Aomi suggested that all these figures were Yūgui, a brief flash of panic crossed Yūgui's gaze.

That was all Aomi needed to confirm his suspicion.

Confident, he smiled and ignored Yūgui, turning to his subordinates instead. "Take care of yourselves."

With that, he leaped toward Yūgui, already casting Genjutsu: Sharingan.

Even at a distance of twenty to thirty meters, Yūgui was caught in the genjutsu, freezing him in place.

Without waiting for the other "ghost corpses" to react, Aomi was already in front of Yūgui, swinging his sword. In a flash, Yūgui's head flew off, crashing into a nearby tree before rolling several meters across the ground.

At that moment, Yūgui broke free of the genjutsu, and his eyes filled with fury and malice as he looked at Aomi.

His headless body still moved, and he opened his mouth to speak, his voice raspy and unsettling like the wheezing of an old man.

"Well done, Ghost Blade! Uchiha Aomi, you cannot kill me," he rasped, manipulating the surrounding corpses to prepare another explosion.

Boom!

Another round of blood and bone fragments scattered, but Aomi was already gone.

In the next moment, another head flew into the air.

Aomi appeared twenty meters away, decapitating another enemy. Before the head even hit the

ground, he vanished again.

In three rapid movements, Aomi had severed the heads of three enemies.

It was only then that Yūgui fully grasped what was happening, and he began directing all the "ghost corpses" to attack Aomi at once.

Explosions rang out one after another, forcing Aomi to evade continuously, limiting his movement.

Meanwhile, all around, the "ghost corpses" echoed Yūgui's voice, taunting Aomi.

"Uchiha Aomi, it's pointless to resist. We are immortal and cannot be defeated. Give up!"

Their voices, like a persistent demonic chant, assaulted Aomi's senses, trying to break his will.

But it was all in vain.

Aomi remained silent, focusing solely on eliminating every last "ghost corpse" in his path.
