"Demo?"
Hearing his request, Akira was slightly stunned.
"Yes!"
In front of him, Kageyama nodded like a chicken pecking rice.
Immediately, he followed up and said:
"If you can't teach me, then I'll just go back and figure it out myself!"
That last sentence was clearly one of Kageyama's more extreme methods.
Now he looked at Akira nervously, worried that he would brush him off and leave him to practice alone.
"Huh!"
Akira glanced at him and let out a couple of chuckles.
"In that case, I'll show you how it's done."
"Good!"
"Good!"
Kageyama said it twice, nearly jumping up in excitement.
But then he quickly tried to compose himself, careful not to give anything away—especially not to Akira.
In his mind, Akira was just being prideful.
He was probably in over his head and would soon embarrass himself trying to look impressive.
Once he failed, Kageyama would definitely get his moment to laugh!
And not just laugh—he'd make sure to tell the others during practice tomorrow.
Everyone would get a good laugh out of this guy!
"Come on! I'll toss the ball for you!"
Kageyama ran toward the court enthusiastically, turning back to look at Akira with eager anticipation.
Seeing him like that, Akira shook his head helplessly, sighed, and followed him onto the court.
The sight made Kageyama even more confident.
In his eyes, Akira's every move screamed weakness and uncertainty.
"Right here!"
"Watch closely!"
Akira walked up to the net and said.
"Yes!"
"Alright, here I go!"
Kageyama suppressed the excitement bubbling inside him and tossed the ball directly to Akira.
He made sure not to add any spin to it, just in case Akira failed and tried to use the ball's rotation as an excuse.
No way was he letting this opportunity slip by!
The ball flew toward Akira, who raised his hands casually.
With his current level of ball control, a no-spin toss like this was a piece of cake.
The ball approached fast, and Akira's fingers twisted upward lightly.
Like a dragonfly skimming the surface of water, the movement was effortless and graceful.
The ball flew over Akira's fingertips without spinning at all, speeding to the other side of the net.
Swoosh!
The ball dropped cleanly to the floor.
And at the same time—
Thud!
Another sound echoed across the court.
Turns out, Kageyama had still been holding a second ball. When he saw Akira's perfect pass, he subconsciously let go—and it dropped to the floor.
"You... you..."
Kageyama stammered, completely speechless.
"Huh!"
Akira gave him another knowing chuckle, as if he could see right through every thought in Kageyama's head.
"That was too easy. Toss me some with spin next."
"I'll show you all of them today."
"If you can't figure it out in a few days, that's on you."
In an actual match, passes are rarely as clean as that non-spinning one.
Even the best Libero can't guarantee a perfect pass every time—especially not when facing a jump serve or a powerful spike.
Just getting the ball up is already an achievement!
So, for a setter to master non-spinning sets, learning how to handle clean tosses is just the beginning.
What really matters is being able to set accurately when the ball is spinning.
Kageyama, still in shock, finally snapped out of it.
Looking at Akira's calm smile, he suddenly got a bad feeling.
Now he was starting to doubt his earlier assumptions.
But even so—
This was a once-in-a-lifetime chance! No way was he backing down!
I don't believe it...
You're good at passing, your serve is strong, your spikes are better than mine...
Now you're telling me you're better than me at setting too??
I'm the setter!!
If you're better than me at this, then what am I even doing here??
Gritting his teeth, Kageyama flung a spinning toss toward Akira.
Whoosh!
Akira leapt into a jump set!
Just like before, the ball—which had been spinning rapidly—passed through his hands like a tamed creature.
Like a docile little rabbit, it obeyed his every command.
It floated across the net without a trace of spin, clean and fast.
"What??"
Even though he had tried to prepare himself, Kageyama still cried out in disbelief.
He had everything planned—he'd even rehearsed what he'd say when Akira failed.
But he hadn't expected Akira to actually pass that kind of ball!
"Learned anything yet?"
Akira's teasing voice pulled him back to reality.
"I... I..."
Kageyama was completely flustered.
Panic started to creep in—but his pride wouldn't let him admit defeat.
What if...
What if the ball spins even faster? What if it doesn't land so cleanly?
That's something that would definitely happen in a real match!
Yeah!
That's it!
Kageyama's expression shifted as he latched onto this final shred of hope.
"Wait… I didn't see it clearly. Let's go a few more times!"
"Huh?"
Akira raised an eyebrow but agreed with a smile.
"Sure."
"But we're only going until eight."
"Any later and we'll miss dinner!"
