Chapter 38 - Not Enough

Paul, Quil, and Embry are patrolling along the border when the dogs bark.

Sprinting towards the destination, they arrive in time to intercept Edward from sneaking across.

Paul's teeth just missed him retreating back across the border for safety.

"Since when did you get so many dogs?" asked Edward.

(Paul, don't break the treaty,) warned Quil when he saw him about to step forward.

(He broke it first!) Paul growled.

(He only crossed a little, you intend to attack and kill,) said Quil calmly.

"Look, I don't mean to break the treaty, I just want Bella back," said Edward, having read Rosalie's mind from earlier, "And I'm not leaving until I do, so you might as well get her for me."

Each wolf growled at that, preparing to attack when Sam showed up.

(I got this, just make sure to watch my back,) said Sam, strolling between them.

(Aren't you supposed to still be on your honeymoon break?) asked Embry.

(What can I say, Emily's pregnancy killed most of the romance, we've been in more of a protective mode of late, so we called it early,) explained Sam, turning into a human.

"You need to leave," said Sam.

"I won't leave without Bella," said Edward.

"If she's here, she's safe; there's no reason for you to be here," said Sam.

"Tell her to come meet me," said Edward unmoved.

"Why don't you call her? Or did you forget how phones work?" asked Sam, causing Embry's wolf to snicker.

"I needed to see her," said Edward.

"Then you can wait, I'm not about to disturb her family time just for you," said Sam.

"What family? Jake's dead, I don't even know what she's doing here," admitted Edward, realizing he might have jumped the gun coming here. The only threat was gone, so she was likely only visiting for goodbyes or some such nonsense.

"Charlie of course, or didn't you know he's been over here most days now," explained Sam, not bothering to correct him.

"Why would Charlie be over here?" asked Edward, thinking of how to deal with this new information.

"Does it matter? You know he has friends here, I've explained enough, you need to leave now," said Sam, shifting back, unwilling to go into further detail with him.

They watched him run off from whence he came and resumed their patrols.

...

After Bella left, Dean gathered everyone to discuss plans for dealing with the Cullens and Bella's future change.

Later, Embry snuck out of the refuge, deciding Jake had a right to know and be part of it.

Charlie, still unaware of the supernatural world, called in the aid of his new lady, Sue Clearwater, to help him and his daughter with her future wedding that she was planning with the Cullens.

Leah, uncomfortable with her mom being alone and surrounded by vamps pleaded for her to stay, but Sue was adamant about helping her new love interest.

When she attempted to go with her, Dean was right there to stop her, not that he forbid her to go, it was however, abundantly clear that he wouldn't be able to hold himself back from slaughtering them all early if she went, and no amount of debate could sway the council's mind to allow them to break the treaty early despite the inevitable.

The Cullens, on the other hand, seemed not even to consider the treaty. They thought such a small thing as willingly changing someone wasn't a big deal, and thought nothing would come of it. Little did they know the storm that was brewing behind the scenes. They blindly placed all their bets on Alice's vision of the future.

On the wedding day, Jake was unlucky enough to get caught by Leah.

(You're not supposed to be here,) she said.

(Out of my way Leah,) warned Jake.

(Why are you here Jake?) she asked unconcerned.

(Embry told me what y'all are planning, I'm here to warn Bella before it's too late,) explained Jake.

(Tch, he's far too good a friend for you, and Bella's not going to change her mind Jake,) said Leah sadly.

(What do you know! I have to try, even if she hates me,) he said, his voice tapering off.

(It's not that she doesn't love you, it's that she hates herself more,) explained Leah, feeling sorry for him.

Silence descended as the words hit him. Seeing she wasn't going to stop him, he took off.

Jake found Bella in her wedding dress, telling her how beautiful she is, and took the coming slap in turn, hugging the tearful girl as she explained she thought him dead, and he just left without a word.

He thought it would be better for her, but she said it's never good to believe the ones you love are dead.

This was a heart-wrenching confession at the worst time, but they each took it in turn, and all he could say was it was not too late for her to leave with him, and the tears returned as she allowed Edward to whisk her away angrily before they could talk more. Making the vamp wonder if maybe she did meet with him and do the deed, but calmed himself with the knowledge of what he overheard.

He, of course, knew someone took her virginity, but not who, and she would not tell, knowing he would likely kill them. 'So much for having a mate as pristine as himself,' he thought indignantly.

Jake left disappointed, remembering Leah's words as Bella went through with the wedding.

The only thing left on his mind now was protecting the happiness chosen, no matter its form.

He needed to challenge Dean for Alpha.
