The sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a golden hue over the fields as I stood there, still processing the screen floating in front of me. The words "Quest: Embrace the Unknown" seemed to glow with an otherworldly light.
"Finally decided to wake up, huh? Took you long enough," a voice rang out, startling me.
I looked around, confused. "Who's there?"
"Down here, genius. I'm your system. You know, the thing that's going to help you figure out this whole 'Eclipsian Mage' business."
I blinked, my confusion turning into disbelief. "You can talk?"
"No, I'm just a figment of your imagination," the voice replied sarcastically. "Of course, I can talk! Now, are you going to stand there gawking, or are we going to get this quest started?"
I shook my head, trying to wrap my mind around the fact that my system had a personality—and a cheeky one at that. "Okay, fine. What do I need to do?"
"Glad you asked, kiddo. First things first, we need to unlock your first ability. To do that, you need to tap into your emotions. Lucky for you, you've got plenty of those bubbling up inside. Let's start with something simple: focus on the anger you felt earlier. Channel it."
I hesitated, remembering the rage I had felt just moments before. "You want me to get angry again?"
"Well, unless you want to stand here all night, yes. Tap into that anger. Let it fuel you."
Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes and tried to recall the feelings of betrayal and frustration. The memory of my brother's letter, the sense of abandonment, and the anger towards the old man's broken promises—all of it came rushing back. My fists clenched at my sides as I let the emotions wash over me.
"Good, good. Now, imagine that anger as a ball of energy inside you. Feel it growing, expanding."
I visualized the anger as a fiery orb, growing hotter and brighter within my chest. The warmth spread through my body, becoming almost unbearable.
"Now, release it."
With a roar, I thrust my hands forward, imagining the energy bursting out of me. But nothing happened. I opened my eyes, half-expecting to see tendrils of light and dark energy, but there was nothing. Just the empty field and the mocking silence.
"Wow, that was... anticlimactic," the system snarked. "You sure you were trying?"
I glared at the empty air. "Of course I was trying! I just... I don't know what went wrong."
"Maybe you're just bad at this. Or maybe you're not angry enough. Try again, and this time, actually put some effort into it."
I clenched my fists, frustration boiling over. I closed my eyes again, focusing on my anger. I pictured the fiery orb, felt it growing inside me. I thrust my hands forward once more, but again, nothing happened.
"Seriously? That's all you've got? Pathetic."
My face burned with shame and anger. "Shut up! I'm trying my best!"
"Well, your best isn't good enough. Keep trying until you get it right. Or do you want to stay a failure forever?"
The words stung, but they also fueled my determination. I took a deep breath and tried again. And again. Each time, I felt the energy building, but I couldn't seem to release it.
After what felt like hours, I collapsed to the ground, exhausted and defeated. "I can't do it," I muttered.
"Giving up already? Figures. Maybe you really are just a misfit."
I gritted my teeth, my anger rekindling. "I'm not a misfit. I'll show you. I'll show everyone."
I pushed myself to my feet, my body trembling with fatigue. I closed my eyes one last time, drawing on every ounce of anger and determination I had left. I visualized the fiery orb, felt it growing, expanding, until it was almost too much to bear. With a final, desperate cry, I thrust my hands forward.
This time, a small spark of energy flickered from my palms, just for an instant. It wasn't much, but it was something.
"Well, look at that. A spark. Not exactly impressive, but it's a start," the system said, almost sounding impressed.
I fell to my knees, panting. "I did it... I actually did it."
"Don't get too excited. You've got a long way to go. But at least now we know you're not completely hopeless."
Despite the system's sarcastic tone, I felt a flicker of hope. I had made progress, no matter how small. And with that small victory, I found the strength to keep going.
As the night settled over the countryside, I resolved to continue my training. This was just the beginning, and I was determined to unlock the full potential of my abilities, no matter how long it took.
"Alright, kid. Enough resting. Time to get back to work," the system chimed in. "You've got a lot to learn and a long way to go."
With a tired but determined smile, I nodded. "Bring it on."
