Inside a roadside motel room, James sat across from Dean and Sam.
Psshh!
Dean cracked open a beer and handed it to James first.
"So, you're saying Alex wants me to come to your universe to help him?"
"That's what he said," James replied, taking a deep swig from the bottle. He coughed a bit, then gave a small nod.
Dean and Sam exchanged a look—both clearly surprised and uneasy. With everything they knew about Alex, they couldn't imagine anything that could actually threaten him.
Even the Creator of this universe—the closest thing to God—seemed to avoid Alex like the plague. From beginning to end, that cosmic entity had never once appeared before Alex, and after Alex left, it never showed itself in this universe again.
Over the years, Dean and Sam had learned a fair bit about the multiverse. They knew that God created countless alternate realities and had immense control over them. At first, they worried that Alex's departure might provoke divine wrath, maybe even lead to the destruction of this universe. But nothing happened. God remained silent. The universe kept spinning. It was reassuring, sure—but also deeply confusing. Had God abandoned this world completely?
And now, hearing James say that Alex needed Dean's help... it was like hearing that a god needed help from an insect.
It just didn't make sense.
"Can you tell us more about what's going on?" Dean asked after a pause, cracking open his own beer. "No offense, but I can't imagine anything that could really threaten Alex. And I definitely don't know what help two ordinary humans like us could offer."
James let out a soft sigh. "I don't know the full picture either. What I do know is that my universe has become a battlefield—a chessboard—for Alex and something else. Something… unknown. They're playing a high-stakes game, one that could reshape the entire multiverse."
"Your universe..." Dean frowned, already picturing cataclysmic events—apocalyptic-level threats.
They'd met Wolverine before, but that was a younger version. The man sitting in front of them now was visibly older, scarred by time and battles. Something clearly hadn't gone well in his world.
"Alex told me that one or more… let's say 'Voldemort-tier' entities are hiding in my universe. Beings who can pull lifeforms from alternate timelines into our reality. Near-omniscient. Near-omnipotent."
James paused, then continued. "But all of that might be a smokescreen. Alex believes it's a distraction—meant to mislead him. He suspects there's something else hidden in my universe. Something capable of disrupting the balance of the entire multiverse."
Sam furrowed his brow. "I don't get it. If those all-powerful Voldemort wannabes are really that strong, why not just take on Alex directly? Why all the games?"
"Maybe they can't beat him," James said with a shrug. "I don't know much about Alex, this is just a temporary alliance. But you two should know better than I do just how powerful he really is."
Sam gave a sheepish smile and said nothing. Yeah, Alex's power had definitely left a deep impression on him back in the day. What still puzzled him, though, was that no matter how many comics he read, he never once found a character named Alex.
But he never dug too deep into that mystery—maybe Alex was something more. Something beyond comic books. Beyond fiction. Maybe he was a being who had stepped outside the panels entirely.
"I'm honestly a little flattered that Alex even thought of me," Dean said evenly. "But for something this important, why wouldn't he reach out to one of his superhero friends? Someone like you. I remember he's connected with people like Superman and Batman. Compared to them, we're just side characters, right?"
"That's a question only Alex can really answer," James replied. "Nobody knows what's going on in his head. But if it's just that specific question, I do have an answer. He once told me that the enemy he's facing is extremely sensitive to superpowered beings. If anyone with powers from another universe shows up, it'll alert them immediately."
"But there are a bunch of superheroes who are just regular humans," Dean argued, taking another sip of his beer. "Like Batman. Iron Man."
James shrugged slightly. He wasn't sure how Alex made decisions either. After a pause, he reached into his coat and pulled out a photo, placing it in front of Dean.
"Maybe, just maybe… Alex values you more than you think."
As James placed the photo down, both brothers leaned in and looked.
Their expressions shifted instantly when they saw a man who looked exactly like Dean—crucified on a giant statue.
Especially Sam—his eyes widened as if he'd seen something truly unreal. He quickly pulled out his phone and snapped a picture of the photo.
"Who the hell is this?" Dean muttered.
"Name was… Soldier Boy, I think," James said after a moment, trying to recall. "Alex mentioned him briefly before."
Now the brothers finally understood why, when Alex first met them, he'd called Dean by that name. Somewhere in the multiverse, Dean really did have a variant who was a super-powered being.
Sam smirked and teased, "Well congrats, Dean. You're a superhero."
Dean rolled his eyes and gave Sam a light kick under the table. "Yeah, some superhero. The guy's nailed to a statue. Doesn't exactly scream 'invincible.'"
"I've never even heard of a hero like that," Dean added.
"There are infinite universes," Sam replied casually. "It's not weird we've never heard of him." Then he turned to James again. "So does Alex only need Dean?"
"Alex didn't really say," James admitted, pausing for a moment and eyeing the two of them. "When I came here, the only instruction I got was to find you two. He never said anything about taking just Dean."
Sam nodded thoughtfully. That made sense. Knowing Alex, and how well he understood the two of them, he would have known the brothers were inseparable. If he only needed Dean, he would've said so. If he didn't specify, then it probably meant both of them were meant to go.
"So when do we leave?" Sam asked.
"The sooner the better," James replied. He was still worried about Charles. Even with Alex around, things could go wrong.
"Alright then," Sam said with a nod, turning to Dean. "I'll go call Ellen, Jo, and Bobby. We vanish without a word, they're gonna freak out."
"Tell Ellen and Bobby. Leave Jo out of it," Dean said with a pointed look.
Hearing that, Sam suddenly seemed to realize something and gave a small nod.
Then he picked up his phone and walked into the bathroom, leaving Dean and James at the table in the front room, still drinking their beers. Meanwhile, in the bedroom, Polaris and Blink were busy helping Kate rebuild her entire worldview.
To be honest, this was the first time either Polaris or Blink had ever traveled to another universe and actually made friends with the locals. The whole experience felt fresh and exhilarating. What thrilled them the most, though, was that this world had no discrimination against mutants.
Not surprising, really. This universe was already a chaotic mess—mutants were hardly the weirdest thing walking around. If half the creatures hiding in the shadows here were ever dragged into the light, the world would descend into absolute panic. And in a world like that, who would even care about mutants?
As long as you weren't some monster that ate people, you were basically seen as humanity's ally. Honestly, it was a miracle the people here didn't worship them as saviors.
"So, after you became a werewolf, you developed this uncontrollable craving for human hearts, right?" Blink asked curiously, giving Kate an intrigued look.
"Yeah," Kate sighed. "It's... hard to explain. Like an addiction. And I've heard that once you've tasted it—even just once—you can never really go back. No matter how long you resist, eventually you'll lose control. That's what happened to my professor."
Through hours of conversation, Polaris and Blink had pieced together much of Kate's story—how she became a werewolf, how she met Dean and Sam, and how everything had spiraled into what it was now.
The professor Kate mentioned was the root cause of everything. He had resisted the urge to feed on human hearts for years, but in the end, he broke and started killing.
To evade the hunters, he infected Kate's ex-boyfriend—a guy who used to sleep through all his lectures—hoping to frame him and let the hunters deal with it. But Kate and her ex's friends saw through everything and ruined his plan.
That guy had lived like a background character on campus, looked down on by everyone. But he craved power. When he discovered the professor's secret, he blackmailed him into turning him into a werewolf, then lured Dean and Sam to investigate—using them to take out the professor.
In the end, the guy completely lost it. He accidentally killed Kate's ex, then turned Kate into a werewolf too, hoping the two of them could live out their monstrous lives together.
But he had severely underestimated Kate—and the human heart still beating inside her.
After being infected, Kate didn't lose herself. She gained the strength of a werewolf… and tore him apart with her own hands. Ever since then, she'd only fed on the hearts of chickens, ducks, lambs, and cows.
In the end, she edited everything into a short video—her transformation, the betrayal, the bloodshed—and left it behind for Dean and Sam, whom she had managed to contact.
