Kyle's eyes widened in surprise. "But at the base, weren't you two together?"
Ashley sighed, running a hand through her hair. "We were... but it was complicated."
"So, you guys are fully separated now, right?" Kyle pressed, his voice lighter than before.
Ashley paused for a moment, feeling the weight of the question. "Yeah... I guess so."
Kyle glanced away, trying to hide the smile that crept onto his face at the thought of Ashley finally being free. Thomas, who had been quietly listening, facepalmed at the scene.
"Can we focus?" Thomas said with a sigh, trying to steer the conversation back. "We've got bigger issues to deal with. Like the disappearances. What do you think these creatures are?"
Ashley turned her attention back to the matter at hand, the weight of her past relationship pushed aside for the moment. "Yeah, I've been reading up on it, but these things... they don't make sense. Do you know anything?"
