"Ahead of you," Rudy teased, though his grin faltered as the ground beneath them began to tremble again.
A loud, mechanical voice boomed through the portal, echoing like a death knell:
WARNING: TWO OF THREE BOSSES ELIMINATED. MONSTERS ENTERING FRENZY STATE. EVOLUTION IMMINENT.
The air grew thick with tension as the remaining monsters began to writhe and convulse. Their bodies twisted and expanded, their ranks shifting upward in real time. C-rank monsters became B-rank. B-rank became A-rank. The once-manageable horde was now a tidal wave of evolved threats.
"You've got to be kidding me," Triss muttered, her gauntlet sparking as she braced herself.
Rudy cracked his knuckles, his expression serious for the first time since they'd entered the portal. "This just got interesting."
Before they could react, the mechanical voice spoke again, its tone colder and more foreboding:
