Chapter 22 - Battle Trial 1

Class 1-A Homeroom – The Day After the Quirk Assessment Test

The classroom buzzed with energy. Students were still riding high from yesterday's quirk assessments—some exhausted, some pumped, and others nervously wondering what came next.

Shin Karasuma sat at his desk by the window, eyes distant as he watched clouds drift across the sky. Yuki was behind him, tapping a pencil rhythmically on her desk, her foot swinging beneath her seat.

"I'm still mad you didn't tell me you could launch a missile with your arm," she muttered, loud enough for several students to hear.

"It was a softball," Shin replied calmly without turning.

Kirishima leaned in from a few rows away. "Still the manliest throw I've ever seen. Gotta spar with you, bro!"

"You already said that," Shin said, offering a slight smile.

Across the room, Midoriya was frantically scribbling notes, mumbling to himself. "Karasuma's quirk… incredible internal amplification of lightning-based strength… tied to muscle fibers and—wait, and his reflex speed—"

"You writing a book over there?" Kaminari grinned from the next desk.

"Just… studying," Midoriya stammered.

"Aw, don't tease him," Uraraka said with a smile. "He was awesome yesterday too."

Bakugou, arms crossed at the back of the room, glared daggers at Midoriya—his usual scowl darkening. But his eyes briefly flicked to Shin as well.

Aizawa entered the room with the same tired, wrapped-up look as always. "Alright. Time to stop acting like it's summer vacation."

He tapped a remote, and a slide projected behind him: "Battle Training."

Gasps and murmurs broke out immediately.

"Battle… training? Already?!" Iida stood with perfect posture. "Sir, isn't it too soon?"

"Heroes don't have warm-ups," Aizawa muttered. "Get used to it."

Sero turned to Mina. "I hope it's not a quiz on battle tactics…"

Yuki leaned over toward Shiro and whispered, "He's gonna drop us in a building full of robots again, isn't he?"

Shiro blinked. "I don't think robots count as realistic hostages."

Momo raised her hand. "Will this involve team formation or solo combat?"

"You'll see," Aizawa replied. "Wear your hero costumes. That's all I'll say."

Now that got everyone buzzing.

"Costumes?!" Mina jumped out of her seat. "YES!"

"I cannot wait to sparkle!" Aoyama declared, striking a pose.

"Mine better have a hood," Tokoyami murmured dramatically.

"I hope mine doesn't scream 'exploding hair,'" Kaminari sighed.

Shin quietly gathered his things. He wasn't showing it, but there was a buzz of anticipation in his chest too.

He glanced across the room. Midoriya looked nervous, chewing on his sleeve, but his eyes… were different now. Steadier.

Their gazes met.

Shin gave a slight nod.

Midoriya's expression brightened, just a little.

Scene: Locker Room – Boys Side

Steam clung to the walls. The guys filed into the massive locker room, each one reacting to their costumes with various degrees of awe, joy, or embarrassment.

Kirishima pumped a fist. "Man, this is awesome!"

"Your outfit looks like it belongs in a rock band," Kaminari grinned, eyeing Jirou's costume as she passed through the connecting hallway.

Todoroki stood quietly, already in his half-cold, half-hot suit. "Functional."

Midoriya looked down at his green jumpsuit with gold trim. "Huh. Not bad. Mom really went all out."

Bakugou growled. "Tch. Mine's perfect. All I need are my damn grenades."

Shin's costume, by contrast, was sleek—deep navy and black with lightning bolt motifs subtly etched into the chest and arms. Faint pulse lines ran through the fabric, conducting and redirecting his quirk's energy. It looked refined, tactical, and ready for war.

"Yo. Shin, that's tight!" Kaminari said. "Wait—is that a stabilizer unit on the back?"

Toma yawned, leaning against a locker in his minimalist black-and-gray uniform. "Looks expensive."

"It's custom reinforced for stress points," Shin replied. "I need it to regulate output."

Kirishima whistled. "You sound like a mech pilot."

"Sometimes he fights like one," Shiro added as he slipped into view quietly, already wearing his muted cloak-style costume. It made him look almost invisible against the gray walls.

"Wait, where'd you come from?!" Kaminari jumped.

Shiro blinked. "I was always here."

Scene: Girls Locker Room

"LOOK AT THIS!" Mina spun around in her pink-and-black outfit. "I feel like a pop star!"

Uraraka flushed slightly, looking down at her pink suit. "Mine's… simple, but cute."

Yuki was already bouncing around in her orange-accented black jumpsuit, covered in zigzag designs that looked like soundwaves. She grinned wide.

"Tell me this doesn't scream awesome chaos."

Jirou smirked. "It screams something."

Momo examined her support-gear-focused design. "Practical. I designed it for flexibility and maximum creation efficiency."

"Girl boss vibes," Yuki nodded.

Asui just blinked at everyone. "Kero. Let's hope we don't get exploded in these."

---

Scene: Outside the Training Grounds – "Battle Trial" Area

All Might stood before them in his golden age form, sparkling like a lighthouse.

"I AM HERE… to teach you how to FIGHT LIKE TRUE HEROES!"

The class lit up in cheers and gasps.

"No way! It's All Might!"

"We get to train with him?!"

Shin watched quietly, standing with his hands behind his back. Midoriya stood beside him, heart hammering in his chest.

He leaned slightly toward Shin and whispered, "I… can't believe this."

Shin smiled. "You've earned it."

All Might continued booming his announcement. "You'll be split into heroes and villains! Team battles! Real stakes! Show me what you've got!"

The screen behind him spun to life, randomly generating teams.

Everyone leaned in.

Shin narrowed his eyes as his name popped up.

Team A: Midoriya & Uraraka (Heroes)

vs. Team B: Bakugou & Iida (Villains)

A tense silence fell.

Midoriya paled. "Oh… oh no…"

Shin watched him closely.

He could already see the weight falling on his friend's shoulders.

This was the moment.

And it would change everything.

*******

All Might's booming voice echoed across the massive training facility.

"Team A – Midoriya and Uraraka!

Team B – Bakugou and Iida!

Proceed to your designated locations!"

The rest of Class 1-A watched the monitor with baited breath as the two teams split and disappeared into the mock building.

Shin stood near the screen, arms crossed, flanked by Shiro and Yuki.

Toma leaned against a wall behind them, half-awake but watching intently.

"He's stronger now," Shin murmured as he watched Midoriya's back disappear through the door.

"Yeah," Yuki agreed, "but Bakugou's still a walking landmine."

Shiro's eyes narrowed. "Midoriya isn't flinching anymore. That's new."

---

Inside the Building: Midoriya & Uraraka – Team A (Heroes)

Midoriya crouched behind a pillar with calm breaths. His new battle suit—slightly reinforced with light padding and tighter sleeves—fit his body like armor. He didn't shake. He didn't stammer. He looked forward.

Uraraka blinked at him. "Izuku… you're really calm right now."

He gave her a confident, steady smile. "I've been training for this. I know Kacchan. I know how he moves. We'll do this smart, and we'll do this fast."

"You sure?" she asked, clutching her helmet nervously.

He nodded. "I'll distract him. You go for the bomb."

"Right," she said with a determined nod. "Let's show them what we've got."

---

Meanwhile: Bakugou & Iida – Team B (Villains)

"Tch," Bakugou growled as he paced inside the room with the fake bomb. "Deku's finally grown a spine, huh? Whatever. Doesn't mean he's stronger than me."

Iida adjusted his helmet. "Bakugou, I suggest we take this seriously. Midoriya was impressive in the assessment test. If we underestimate—"

"Shut it, Glasses. You guard the bomb. I'll blow Deku into the floor."

---

Outside – Class 1-A Watching the Screen

The class watched as the internal cameras tracked the two teams.

"Midoriya's moving fast," Todoroki commented, hands in his pockets.

"He's completely different from when we first met," Momo noted. "Composed. Tactical."

Shin watched in silence, eyes flicking across the feed. He could already see how Midoriya positioned himself to bait Bakugou.

He smiled slightly. He's not running away anymore.

---

Inside – Midoriya vs. Bakugou

Bakugou roared around the corner with an explosion that rattled the hallway. "DEKU!"

Midoriya didn't run.

He shifted to the side, using the edge of a pillar as cover, and redirected his body low into a sweep kick.

Bakugou barely dodged, but Midoriya was already up again, fists raised.

"Come on, Kacchan. Is that all you've got?" Midoriya said calmly.

"WHAT?!" Bakugou's eyes flared. "You think you can taunt me now?!"

Another explosion burst forth, but Midoriya was faster than before, his movements tighter, his body reacting without hesitation.

---

Battle Observers – Class 1-A & All Might

"He's countering Bakugou!" Kaminari shouted. "He's seriously keeping up!"

"I didn't expect Midoriya to fight this well," Tokoyami said.

Todoroki narrowed his eyes. "It's not just strength. It's discipline."

All Might smiled proudly beside the screen. "Young Midoriya has grown… not just in power, but in spirit."

Shin said nothing, but there was a subtle pride in his gaze.

Yuki elbowed him. "I know you helped him. Don't play innocent."

"I didn't," Shin replied. "He helped himself."

---

Back Inside – The Final Play

With Bakugou momentarily thrown off balance from a counterpunch, Midoriya activated a controlled burst of One For All into his legs and launched himself past him.

He sprinted upward, meeting Uraraka at the stairwell.

"Go!" he shouted.

Uraraka shot up the next floor, tapping the bomb with a grin.

"TEAM A WINS!"

---

Aftermath

Midoriya panted, covered in dust, sweat dripping down his brow—but he stood tall.

Bakugou punched the ground, growling, before finally stopping. For the first time, he didn't shout at the result. Just stared in disbelief.

"I… lost."

All Might clapped his hands as the teams regrouped.

"An excellent showing from both sides! And young Midoriya—your growth is… impressive!"

The class broke into chatter and compliments. Uraraka clung to Midoriya's arm with a big grin.

"You were awesome!"

"Way to go, Midoriya!" Kirishima gave him a thumbs up.

"Dude, you fought Bakugou," Sero said. "That was nuts."

Shin approached with a calm smile.

"Well played."

Midoriya smiled back. "Thanks, Shin. I had a good teacher."

Shin blinked, then looked away with a quiet huff. "I didn't teach you anything."

But he was smiling too.
