Chapter 14 - The Angel of Life

Yuzu stood in the kitchen, holding up a single finger. Takeru watched her, nodding attentively.

"Repeat after me," Yuzu instructed.

"One, do not enter my room under any circumstances," Yuzu stated firmly.

"Do not enter your room under any circumstances," Takeru echoed.

"Two, bath time is sacred. Do not interrupt, even if you believe yourself to be on the verge of death," Yuzu declared.

"Bath time is sacred. Do not interrupt, even if I believe myself to be on the verge of death," Takeru repeated precisely.

"Three, you are responsible for your own meals and cleaning up after yourself. I am not your maid," Yuzu emphasized.

"I am responsible for my own meals and cleaning up after myself. You are not my maid," Takeru recited.

"If you follow these rules, then I suppose you and your mother can stay here," Yuzu conceded with a sigh.

"Thank you for allowing us to stay, Yuzu-chan," Takeru expressed gratefully, bowing slightly.

"It wasn't exactly a decision I made willingly," Yuzu shrugged dismissively. "Frankly, I'd much prefer to live alone."

Takeru blinked, a hint of confusion in his eyes. "Huh? That's not what Mommy said."

"Huh?" Yuzu responded, a question mark above her head.

"She mentioned you were really lonely and cried yourself to sleep every night, like a baby," Takeru revealed innocently.

"I AM GOING TO KILL THAT BICTH!!" Yuzu exclaimed theatrically, three angry tick marks materializing on her face.

Elder House

"You wanna what?!" Gerard and Yuzu exclaimed, their voices sharp with surprise as the Elder raised a questioning brow. The scene was a tableau of disbelief: Yuzu, Gerard, the Elder, Luna, and her young son Takeru were gathered, engaged in a conversation that had just taken an unexpected turn.

"You heard me," Luna stated calmly, her gaze unwavering. "I want to live with Yuzu."

A stunned silence fell over the group. Yuzu and Gerard could only gape at her, while the Elder cleared his throat, attempting to regain control of the situation.

"While that could be arranged," the Elder began slowly, his voice measured, "is there a specific reason why it has to be Yuzu?"

"Yeah, why not me?!" Gerard burst out, his tone laced with comical desperation, earning a collective sweatdrop from everyone present.

"It's quite simple," Luna explained patiently. "Given everything that's happened with her parents, I'm certain Yuzu must feel incredibly lonely. Furthermore, I cannot in good conscience leave a child to fend for herself." She then leveled a pointed look at Gerard and the Elder, her eyes narrowing slightly. "I am still quite appalled that you two allowed her to live alone in the first place." Gerard and the Elder visibly flinched under her scrutiny.

"Now hold on," Gerard protested, shifting uncomfortably. "We did try to convince her to live with one of us, but she was adamant about not leaving her house."

"Well, naturally," Luna retorted, her voice edged with exasperation. "Why would she want to abandon the home she was raised in? The obvious solution was for one of you to move in with her."

"We tried that as well," Gerard replied, throwing up his hands in frustration. "She insisted she could take care of herself and that she didn't trust anyone."

"Again, that's perfectly understandable," Luna countered. "You treated her as if she were some monster. How could you even entertain the notion that a four-year-old child could murder her own parents?"

"It's easy for you to say, Luna-san," Gerard shot back, his own frustration mounting. "You weren't there. What we saw was Yuzu with a knife and her parents lying dead. Of course, we would arrive at that conclusion."

"Did you bother to ask Yuzu for her version of events?" Luna pressed.

"Yes," Gerard admitted reluctantly. "She mentioned something about a man—"

"Then it must have been that man," Luna insisted.

"But no one else saw him," Gerard argued. "No one saw anyone enter or leave the village that night. It was just Yuzu and her parents. How do you explain that?"

"Well," Luna conceded, wiping a bead of sweat from her brow, "regardless, the point is that you should have taken better care of Yuzu."

"We tried our best!" Gerard exclaimed, his voice rising.

"You should have tried harder!" Luna retorted, her own temper flaring.

"Just get off our backs already, woman!" Gerard snapped.

"Excuse me?!" Luna said, her eyes widening in disbelief.

"HEY!" Yuzu's voice rang out, sharp and clear, cutting through the escalating argument.

Gerard and Luna immediately halted their shouting match and turned to Yuzu.

"Hi," Yuzu said calmly, despite the tension crackling in the air. "If you're going to argue about someone in front of them, at least let them voice their own thoughts on the matter."

Everyone looked at Yuzu, a mixture of surprise and reluctant respect in their eyes. They nodded, effectively giving her the floor. Yuzu took a deep breath, steeling herself for what she was about to say.

"I must admit," she began, her voice trembling slightly, "that I am still not over my parents' death, and I cannot honestly say that I forgive the villagers for the way they treated me. However, I can also understand, to some extent, where they were coming from. My memory of that night is...hazy. Perhaps there was a man, perhaps not. The undeniable truth is that my parents are gone, and in some ways, I feel as though it was my fault." Yuzu's eyes welled up with tears as she spoke. She then turned towards Luna, her gaze meeting hers.

"Luna, was it?" Yuzu asked, her voice softer now. Luna nodded. "Thank you for your concern, but Uncle Gerard and the old man were right. I never asked for or wanted any help, and I don't need it now. So, I'd appreciate it if you would all leave me alone."

"I refuse," Luna stated firmly, her tone leaving no room for argument, surprising everyone present.

"What?" Yuzu whispered, her eyes widening.

"You might be able to deceive everyone else," Luna said, her voice softening slightly as she looked at Yuzu, "but you're not fooling me."

"What the hell are you talking about?" Yuzu asked, thoroughly confused.

Ignoring Yuzu's question, Luna turned to the Elder. "Elder-san, I want to live with Yuzu. Can you make that happen?"

The Elder blinked in surprise. "Well, yes, but Yuzu has to agree to it first."

"And I want to live alone," Yuzu reiterated, her voice laced with frustration.

"Can't we just bypass that formality?" Luna asked, a hopeful note creeping into her voice.

The Elder shook his head slowly. "I'm afraid not. Everyone who owns a house in Kolt village is entitled to do as they please with the property. Despite her young age and the loss of her parents, she is essentially the homeowner, so it is ultimately her decision whether or not she wishes to live with others."

Luna turned towards Yuzu, a bright, almost unnerving smile spreading across her face. "Yuzu-san, may I please live with you?" Luna asked, her voice sweet as honey.

"No, you may not," Yuzu replied, matching Luna's saccharine smile with one of her own.

"Please~" Luna persisted, her smile tightening slightly.

"No~" Yuzu repeated, her own smile unwavering.

"Pretty please?" Luna asked, her smile now strained, and a vein throbbing visibly at her temple.

"No means no," Yuzu said, the same strained smile plastered on her face, a matching vein now visible on her own forehead.

The two held each other's gaze, their smiles fixed in place, before suddenly erupting into laughter. Everyone else in the room sweatdropped, completely bewildered by the sudden shift in tone.

"WHY NOT, YOU LITTLE BRAT?!" Luna yelled.

"BECAUSE ONE, I WANT TO BE ALONE! AND TWO, WHY WOULD I WANT TO ROOM WITH A BLONDE BIMBO LIKE YOU?!" Yuzu retorted, her voice equally loud.

"Who are you calling a blonde bimbo?!" Luna demanded, pinching Yuzu's cheek.

"You! You blonde bimbo!" Yuzu snapped, pinching Luna's cheek in return.

"That's enough!" the Elder interjected, his voice firm, putting an end to their childish squabble. The two girls immediately turned to him. "Listen, Miss Luna, it seems Yuzu is quite resolute on this matter. It appears you will simply have to find somewhere else to live."

"My door is always open," Gerard offered hopefully.

Luna shook her head. "Thank you, Gerard-san, but no. It has to be Yuzu."

"I see," the Elder said, a hint of sympathy in his voice, while Gerard let out a dramatic, comical wail of despair. Luna then turned to Yuzu, her expression softening. "Yuzu, I understand if you don't want me to live there, but would you at least consider taking Takeru in?"

"Mommy?" Takeru said, looking up at his mother with wide, questioning eyes.

"What about you?" the Elder asked Luna.

"I'll be fine," Luna reassured him. "While I would prefer to live with my son, my main priority is ensuring that Takeru has a safe place to stay."

"So what, you're just going to abandon him?" Yuzu said, her tone accusatory.

"No, of course not," Luna replied quickly. "I'll visit him from time to time."

"Miss Luna, there's no need for you to go that far," the Elder said kindly. "I'm sure we can find someone else for you to live with."

Gerard coughed loudly, drawing attention to himself.

"That's not Gerard," the Elder deadpanned.

"Oh, come on!" Gerard exclaimed. "Is living with me really such a terrible thing?!"

The Elder turned to Gerard, his expression one of weary resignation. "Gerard, I may be old, but I am not foolish. I'm not about to let a lady live with a man who has...clear motives for her."

Gerard began to sweat nervously. "I-I don't know what you're talking about. I'm just trying to help a lady out, like the gentleman I am."

"Uh-huh," the Elder said dryly.

"And you know," Gerard continued, a sly grin spreading across his face, "if something were to 'happen' along the way, I wouldn't object-ow!'' Gerard stopped as the Elder smacked him upside the head with his cane.

"No, bad Gerard!" the Elder scolded, his voice echoing slightly in the open space.

"I'm just saying!" Gerard mumbled, gingerly touching the comical bump swelling on his head. As the Elder continued to berate him in hushed tones, Yuzu, her expression unreadable, turned her attention to Luna and the small boy, Takeru, who stood slightly behind his mother, clutching her dress.

"What are you playing at, lady?" Yuzu asked, her tone sharp and laced with suspicion as she fixed Luna with a direct stare.

Luna blinked innocently, her wide brown eyes conveying an air of utter naivety. "What do you mean, dear?"

Yuzu's gaze flickered down to Takeru before returning to Luna, her small hands clenching at her sides. "Why do I have to take care of your brat?"

Luna's smile remained gentle. "Oh dear, no one said you had to take care of him. I simply want him to live with you."

Yuzu's skepticism was palpable. "What makes you think I'll take him anyway?"

A knowing smile played on Luna's lips as she leaned slightly closer to Yuzu, her voice dropping conspiratorially. "Because I know you can't say no to children, Miss, I want to be a mom when I grow up.

A furious blush instantly stained Yuzu's cheeks, her eyes widening in disbelief and a hint of panic. "H-h-how the hell did you know that?!"

Luna's smile widened into a mischievous smirk. "It was in your diary."

"YOU LOOKED AT MY DIARY?!" Yuzu shrieked, her voice cracking with indignation.

"Yup," Luna replied casually, her smirk deepening. "I know all your dirty secrets. So, if you don't allow Takeru to live with you, I'll spread them across the village."

"Y-you evil bitch!" Yuzu hissed, trembling with a mixture of anger and humiliation.

"Language, young lady," Luna chuckled, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "And sorry, hon, I don't want to have to blackmail you, but you left me no choice."

Yuzu shook furiously, muttering under her breath, "Damn that woman!"

"So, what do you say?" Luna asked, her tone softening slightly as she observed Yuzu's internal struggle.

Yuzu stared intently at the mother-son duo, her expression conflicted. Finally, she spoke, her words surprising both Luna and Takeru. "Let me talk to the boy first."

"Why?" Luna asked, her brow furrowed in curiosity.

"I want his opinion on the matter," Yuzu replied, her gaze now fixed on Takeru.

A teasing glint returned to Luna's eyes. "Sure you don't just want to practice your mommy skills?"

Yuzu's blush returned with a vengeance. "S-shut up! Are you going to let me talk to him or what?!"

Luna considered for a moment, tapping a finger to her chin. "That sounds fine to me, but let me talk to him first. He gets nervous around strangers."

Yuzu rolled her eyes, a hint of impatience in her demeanor. "Whatever. Have him meet me at my house when you're done."

"Sure thing," Luna said, watching as Yuzu abruptly turned and left the house. Luna then knelt down to Takeru's eye level, gently petting his soft blond hair. "Okay, sweetie, you are going to have a one-on-one talk with Yuzu. Be polite and behave yourself."

Takeru's lower lip trembled, his wide eyes filled with apprehension. "I-I don't know, Mommy. She seems scary."

"It's fine," Luna reassured him, her voice soothing. "She may look like a grumpy pants on the outside, but I know she is sweet inside. Plus, she is just a little lonely."

"Really?" Takeru asked, his gaze searching his mother's.

"Really," Luna affirmed with a warm smile. "So lonely that she cries herself to sleep every night. So, she can really use a friend like you."

"Okay, I'll talk to her, and I'll be her friend," Takeru declared, a newfound determination in his small voice. Luna smiled, her heart swelling with affection, and kissed his forehead.

"That's my Takeru. Now go on, you don't want to keep your new friend waiting," Luna said, giving him a gentle nudge.

Takeru nodded earnestly and rushed out of the house. Luna stood there, a satisfied smile gracing her lips, as Gerard and the Elder approached her, their eyebrows raised in mutual bewilderment.

"What was that all about?" Gerard asked, his confusion evident.

Luna giggled, a secretive smile playing on her lips. "You'll see." Gerard and the Elder exchanged perplexed glances.

Yuzu stalked back and forth across the worn stone floor of her kitchen, her agitation a palpable presence in the small space. The sudden appearance of Takeru in the doorway startled her from her furious internal monologue.

"Yuzu-chan, I'm here," the boy announced, his voice small against the weight of her mood.

"What is your mom's problem?!" Yuzu's voice cracked with a raw edge of frustration, the question exploding from her.

Takeru blinked, his brow furrowing in confusion. "Sorry?"

"Ever since you two barged into my life," Yuzu continued, her tone sharp and accusatory, "she has been constantly interfering, and I want to know why."

"You're asking me?" Takeru tilted his head, his innocent gaze questioning.

"Every time I try to talk to her, she just avoids the question," Yuzu explained, her hands gesturing emphatically. "I assumed she would have confided in you."

Takeru shook his head, his blond hair swaying slightly. "Sorry, I don't know anything. I just do what Mommy says."

Yuzu tsked, a sound of pure exasperation escaping her lips. "You're useless," she muttered under her breath, turning sharply to leave the suffocating tension of the kitchen.

"Wait, Yuzu-chan," Takeru called out, his small hand reaching towards her sleeve. "I'm sure Mommy just wants to help you."

"Well, I didn't ask for her help, and I certainly don't need it," Yuzu retorted, her voice laced with a defensive bitterness.

"I don't understand, Yuzu-chan," Takeru persisted, his youthful brow creased with genuine confusion. "Why are you so against people helping you?"

"That's none of your business, brat," Yuzu snapped, the harshness of her words aimed more at her own turmoil than the boy.

"Why are you so mean?" Takeru's voice was soft, tinged with hurt. "Everyone else here seems so nice…"

Yuzu's head whipped around, her eyes flashing with a dangerous intensity. "NICE? NICE?! ALL ANYONE HAS EVER DONE IN THIS VILLAGE IS TREAT ME LIKE SHIT SINCE MY PARENTS DIED! SO SORRY IF I'M A LITTLE MEAN! NOW UNLESS YOU HAVE SOMETHING ELSE STUPID TO SAY, SHUT UP AND GET OUT!!"

Takeru recoiled, his small face crumpling as large tears welled in his eyes. A choked sob escaped him, quickly followed by another, and another, until he was wailing loudly, his small body shaking. Guilt, sharp and unwelcome, twisted in Yuzu's chest as she watched his distress.

"Hey, stop crying!" Yuzu demanded, her voice betraying a flicker of panic. But Takeru was beyond reasoning, his sobs echoing in the tense silence. Impulsively, Yuzu stepped forward, awkwardly hugging the boy and gently rubbing his head in a hesitant attempt at comfort.

"Okay, okay, I'm sorry! I won't yell at you anymore!" Yuzu mumbled, her own voice thick with reluctant apology.

Takeru looked up at her, his face streaked with tears, his lower lip trembling. "Promise?" he sniffled.

Yuzu sighed, the fight draining out of her. "I promise. Just please stop crying…"

Takeru sniffed again, a watery smile breaking through his tears. "Okay!"

Yuzu released him, a faint blush rising on her cheeks. "Geez, you're a boy; you shouldn't cry so easily over something like that."

"I'm sorry," Takeru mumbled, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand.

Yuzu sighed again, a more genuine remorse coloring her tone. "No, I'm sorry. I know I can be a little aggressive. I'll try to dial it back, at least for you." Takeru looked at her, surprise widening his tear-filled eyes.

"Wow, Mommy was right. You really are nice," Takeru said, a genuine smile now gracing his lips. Yuzu's blush deepened, spreading across her face.

"I am not!" Yuzu insisted, trying to mask her embarrassment with indignation. "What does your mom know anyway?!"

"Mommy has always been a good judge of character," Takeru said confidently. "So when she says someone is a certain way, she's usually right."

Yuzu raised her eyebrows, a flicker of curiosity in her gaze. "You really like your mom, huh?"

Takeru's smile widened. "Sure do! Mommy's like my best friend in the whole world, and I'm sure if you give her a chance, you'll like her too."

Yuzu scoffed, her earlier defensiveness returning. "With that blond bimbo? I doubt it."

"Please, Yuzu-chan?" Takeru pleaded, his voice small and earnest. "She really wants to help you. She said that she absolutely needs to help you, especially you."

"Why me?" Yuzu questioned, her skepticism evident. "What is so special about me that she has to get involved no matter what?"

"Probably because your situation reminds her of herself," Takeru answered, his small face earnest. Yuzu's brow furrowed in surprise, her initial irritation softening into curiosity.

"What do you mean?" Yuzu asked, her voice a touch softer.

Takeru looked up at Yuzu, his gaze serious beyond his years. "Mommy's parents were also killed when she was little, just like yours. The people of her village believed she had done it. They treated her terribly, whispering behind her back and openly casting blame. She tried to explain that she was innocent, but the villagers wouldn't believe her. They called her cruel names – demon, murderer, witch."

A flicker of recognition sparked in Yuzu's eyes. "What did she do about it?"

"She got so fed up with their nasty treatment that she started pulling pranks on them," Takeru explained, a hint of a smile playing on his lips as he recounted his mother's rebellious past. "Silly things at first, then bolder ones as her resentment grew. However, the villagers grew tired of her tricks and complained to the village elder. The elder tried to reason with Mommy, to guide her back to peace, but Mommy wouldn't listen. So, he had no choice but to ban Mommy from the village."

Yuzu leaned forward, her earlier defiance replaced by a growing sense of shared experience. "What happened after that?"

Takeru's expression clouded over, the lightness fading. "I don't know," he admitted, his voice quiet. "Mommy never mentioned what happened after that, not in detail. She just said it was a harsh and brutal time until she met my dad. She doesn't like to talk about it much."

A wave of astonishment washed over Yuzu, the similarities hitting her with unexpected force. "So her life was just like mine…" she whispered, the realization hanging heavy in the air.

Takeru nodded solemnly. "Yes. That's why Mommy wants to help you so badly, Yuzu-chan. She sees herself in you. She doesn't want you to end up like her, alone and bitter."

Yuzu pondered this information, her initial resistance wavering. The pieces clicked into place, explaining Luna's relentless persistence. Yet, a stubborn core of independence remained. She shook her head slightly.

"Look," Yuzu said, a hint of defensiveness creeping back into her tone, "I feel for your mom, I really do. But that has nothing to do with me. Sure, our lives may have been similar in some messed-up way, but that doesn't mean I'll end up like her, banished and alone."

Takeru's gaze sharpened, his childish innocence momentarily overshadowed by a surprising depth of understanding. "Are you sure about that, Yuzu-chan?" he asked, his small voice carrying a weight of unspoken warning. His directness took Yuzu aback.

"What do you mean?" Yuzu asked, a flicker of unease in her chest.

"Yuzu-chan," Takeru said, his tone earnest and surprisingly insightful. "You're doing the same things Mommy did, pushing everyone away, acting out in anger. And look at what happened to her. You would have gotten banned from the village, too, if it weren't for Mommy, Elder-san, and even Uncle Gerard standing up for you. Think about it, Yuzu-chan. You would have been all alone in this huge world, with no friends and no family. Can't you at least show them some appreciation for trying to help you?"

Yuzu stiffened, her pride bristling. "I didn't ask for her help! Or theirs!"

"Maybe not," Takeru conceded, "but you got it anyway. And not just Mommy, but Elder-san and Gerard-san too. They all want to help you, Yuzu-chan, but you keep turning them down. Why are you so determined to be alone?"

Yuzu scoffed, turning away slightly. "You wouldn't get it," she mumbled, the pain of the past year a raw ache in her heart.

"Try me," Takeru persisted, his small hand reaching out tentatively.

"Why should I?" Yuzu retorted, her voice laced with a familiar bitterness. "How would you know what it's like to be alone for a year, with everyone whispering and pointing? How would you know what it's like to lose your parents on your birthday, the one day that's supposed to be special, and then be blamed for their deaths? You don't know anything about that kind of pain!"

"I wouldn't," Takeru said softly, his gaze unwavering, "but Mommy would. She understands that pain."

Yuzu rolled her eyes, a cynical smirk twisting her lips. "Let me guess," she said sarcastically, "she lost her parents on her fourth birthday to some shadowy stranger with a knife who just vanished into thin air?"

Takeru blinked, his expression surprisingly steady. "Actually, yes."

Yuzu stared blankly at Takeru, the smirk dissolving into disbelief. "You're shitting me."

"It's true, according to her," Takeru confirmed, his voice matter-of-fact. Yuzu slumped, the fight draining out of her.

"I… I don't have the energy for this," Yuzu sighed exasperatedly, running a hand through her messy hair. "Listen, kid, if I let you and your mom live here, would that finally get her off my ass?''

Takeru considered this, his brow furrowed in thought. "I don't know if it would completely stop her," he admitted honestly, "but I do know she's not going to give up until she feels like she's helped you. She has always been stubborn that way, especially when she cares about someone."

Yuzu was trapped. She didn't want that nosy woman and her overly perceptive son invading her space, but it sounded like Luna wouldn't leave her alone until she got her way. Not to mention, Luna knew about her embarrassing diary and her secret desire. And if they had both gone through similar tragedies… maybe, just maybe, Luna would understand her in a way no one else ever had. With a mixture of resignation and a sliver of reluctant hope swirling within her, Yuzu came to a decision. She held up a single finger, her expression a mask of reluctant authority.

"Repeat after me," Yuzu instructed, her voice firm despite the internal turmoil.

Present

Yuzu fumed in the kitchen, her anger a palpable presence. After a minute or two, Takeru reappeared, Luna trailing behind him.

"Hello, Yuzu-chan." Luna's greeting was cut short as a ceramic bowl whizzed past her head, narrowly missing its target.

"Don't 'hello Yuzu-chan' me, bitch!" Yuzu shrieked, her voice sharp with fury.

"Language, young lady," Luna chided, her expression unperturbed. "What has you so upset now?"

Yuzu pointed an accusatory finger at Luna. "You told Takeru that I cry myself to sleep every night!"

"Did I?" Luna mused, a finger tapping her chin in mock contemplation.

"Yes!" Yuzu retorted.

Luna made a dismissive gesture. "Whoops, my bad. Tee-hee."

"TEE-HEE MY ASS! I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!" Yuzu roared, her face contorted in a comical display of rage.

"Calm down," Luna said, a hint of amusement in her tone. "I told you, I had to prepare Takeru for talking to you. He would have thought you were scary if I hadn't told him that."

"Whatever," Yuzu scoffed, her anger still simmering. "I'll let you two live here, but you have to follow my rules."

"Sure thing, dear," Luna replied, a soft smile gracing her lips.

Yuzu raised an eyebrow, a flicker of suspicion in her gaze. "What's that look for?"

"Takeru told me what you did for him," Luna explained, her smile unwavering. "I knew that behind your rough exterior, there was a sweet and kind girl inside."

A furious blush crept up Yuzu's neck, staining her cheeks. "I didn't do it for him! I didn't want him to mess up my floor with his stupid crying."

"Uh-huh," Luna smirked, clearly unconvinced.

"I was, you, gah!" Yuzu sputtered, her embarrassment overwhelming her. She bolted past Luna and Takeru, fleeing the kitchen in a desperate attempt to escape her mortification. Luna turned to Takeru, a knowing smile playing on her lips.

"Well, sweetie, what do you think of Yuzu?" Luna asked.

"Honestly, she seemed mean and scary," Takeru admitted, then his small face softened as he recalled the hug and kind words Yuzu had offered. He smiled. "But she can be kind and sweet when she wants to be."

"That's good to hear," Luna said, her voice gentle. "Now it's getting late. Let's hurry on to bed."

"Okay," Takeru replied, already scampering out of the kitchen. Luna lingered for a moment, her gaze sweeping over the now-empty space, an unreadable expression on her face, before she finally turned off the lights.

Next day

The sun, a fiery orb, blazes through the window, rousing Yuzu from her slumber.

"Another morning," Yuzu sighs, the words a weary whisper. She rises, her movements sluggish, and shuffles towards the bathroom. The mirror reflects a familiar, tired face as she mechanically brushes her teeth, showers, and dresses.

"Not that it matters," Yuzu muses, a bitter taste in her mouth, as she ambles towards the kitchen. The thought echoes her daily dread: "It's just going to be the same old day, a monotonous cycle of villagers' wrath, endless arguments, and the futile attempts of the old man and Uncle Gerard to quell the storm. Wash, rinse, and repeat. Sometimes, I truly wonder why I bother getting out of bed. Perhaps I'm better off…" Her morbid contemplation is abruptly interrupted by an enticing aroma wafting from the kitchen.

"What in the hell?" Yuzu mutters, her curiosity piqued, as she steps into the kitchen, a truly astonishing sight greeting her. The large wooden table is laden with an abundant feast: glistening scrambled eggs, crispy strips of bacon, an assortment of freshly baked bagels, golden waffles, and fluffy pancakes. Yuzu's jaw drops, her eyes wide with disbelief at the unexpected spectacle.

"Wha?" Yuzu stammers, her voice barely a whisper, utterly bewildered by the culinary display.

"

"Good morning, Yuzu-chan," a voice said, and Yuzu turned to find Luna in a cooking apron.

"What is this?" Yuzu asked.

Luna smiled. "What does it look like, silly? I made breakfast!" she said, as Takeru could be seen ravenously scoffing down pancakes.

"But why so much, and for just you two?" Yuzu asked, gesturing to the overflowing table.

Luna giggled. "It's not just for us; it's for you too."

"For me? Why?" Yuzu questioned, a flicker of surprise in her eyes.

"Think of it as thanks for letting us live here," Luna said, her voice warm. "And I'll be doing it from now on."

"Hmph! I don't need your thanks, and I don't need your food! I can get food on my own—" Yuzu began, her voice tinged with a familiar stubbornness, before her stomach loudly rumbled, betraying her words.

"Sounds like someone's hungry~" Luna teased gleefully, her eyes twinkling with amusement. Yuzu blushed furiously, a deep crimson spreading across her cheeks.

"S-shut up!" Yuzu screamed, her voice a mix of embarrassment and indignation. She shook her head, a sigh escaping her lips. "Fine, I'll have a little."

Luna's smile widened as Yuzu reluctantly approached the table. She grabbed a plate and carefully filled it with a generous portion of fluffy scrambled eggs, crispy bacon strips, and golden-brown pancakes. Yuzu took a hesitant bite of her eggs. Her eyes widened, and she froze, as if in a trance. Then, as if a dam had broken, she quickly ate all her eggs, finished every last piece of bacon, and devoured her pancakes in mere seconds.

"So delicious!" Yuzu exclaimed, her eyes sparkling like polished jewels. "The unparalleled fluffiness of the eggs, the perfect crispness of the bacon, the melt-in-your-mouth softness of the pancakes—they were all perfect!" Luna and Takeru sweatdropped, a mixture of amusement and bewilderment on their faces.

"Glad you liked it, dear."

"I want seconds!" Yuzu demanded, her voice filled with an almost childlike eagerness.

"Of course, hun, there's plenty left," Luna said, gesturing to the remaining feast. Yuzu wasted no time, immediately reaching for a second plate.

"Goodness, Yuzu-chan, I didn't know you were this hungry," Luna said, genuinely surprised. "Who had been feeding you this whole time?"

"Unfle geverd and the old fan—" Yuzu began, her mouth still full.

"Don't talk with your mouth full, dear," Luna reprimanded gently.

Yuzu swallowed, her cheeks puffed out, and then said, "Uncle Gerard and the old man. They give me food from time to time. But what they make doesn't come close to this."

Luna giggled, a soft, warm sound. "I'm glad you like it. I could teach you how to cook if you like."

Yuzu's eyes, wide with a childlike wonder, sparkled. "Really?" She shook her head, a faint blush dusting her cheeks. "I mean, no thanks."

'Oh Yuzu, still so stubborn…' Luna mused, a soft smile playing on her lips.

Luna finished her meal, savoring the last morsel, then untied her apron, its soft fabric rustling. "I'm going to go say hello to the rest of the villagers. Come with me, Yuzu."

"Huh? Why? Hey!" Yuzu stammered, her voice a mix of confusion and protest.

Luna didn't respond, her gaze fixed on something beyond Yuzu's comprehension. Instead, she gently took Yuzu by the wrist, her touch warm and firm, and turned to face Takeru.

"Takeru, sweetie, we're going now. Make sure to clean up after you're done, alright?" Luna instructed, her voice laced with affection.

"Ok, Mommy!" Takeru replied, his voice cheerful and obedient.

"Hey, let go of me, you bitch!" Yuzu shrieked, struggling against Luna's grip. Luna merely smiled, a knowing glint in her eyes, as she effortlessly dragged the protesting Yuzu out of the kitchen and towards the bustling village.

Yuzu and Luna ambled through the bustling village, the morning sun casting long shadows. Luna, with her radiant smile, offered warm greetings to every villager they passed, her voice a melodic counterpoint to the lively sounds of the awakening day. In stark contrast, Yuzu moved with a perpetually sullen expression, a visible pout on her lips, her gaze a silent glare. While the villagers responded to Luna with genuine affection, their greetings to Yuzu, though present, carried a hint of wariness, a subtle acknowledgment of her lingering displeasure.

"Why do I have to do this?" Yuzu deadpanned, her voice laced with an almost theatrical weariness.

Luna's gentle laughter, light as a chime, filled the air. "Oh dear, and here I thought you had reconciled with the villagers."

''Doesn't mean I've forgiven them for how they treated me," Yuzu retorted, her pout deepening, a stubborn defiance in her eyes. Luna merely giggled again, a knowing amusement dancing in her eyes as they continued their stroll through the heart of the village.

"Hey!"

A boisterous voice cut through the village hum, causing both Yuzu and Luna to turn. Gerard, his gait purposeful, was approaching them, a faint blush already dusting his cheeks.

"Good morning, Gerard-san," Luna greeted, offering a graceful bow, her movements fluid and serene.

"Good morning, Luna-san," Gerard responded, his blush deepening as his gaze lingered on Luna. His eyes then shifted to Luna's side, and his voice, which had been so warm, dropped a notch. "Oh, Yuzu…" The subtle sigh in his tone was unmistakable.

"Wow, don't strain yourself with enthusiasm or anything," Yuzu sneered, a sharp edge to her voice, her eyes narrowing in mock offense.

"Now, now," Luna gently reprimanded, her voice a soft, soothing balm. "How may I help you, Gerard-san?"

Gerard cleared his throat, a nervous habit. "Yes, I merely wished to extend a formal welcome to our humble village. And… I brought you a token of our hospitality." He reached into the pocket of his tunic, his fingers closing around a small object. He withdrew a brilliant blue pendant, its polished surface catching the light, and presented it to Luna. Luna's eyes widened, a fragile tear forming in their depths as she gazed at the shimmering jewel.

"Oh, Gerard, it's beautiful," Luna said.

"I'm glad you like it," Gerard said, blushing. "a-and I was wondering if you're not busy later, maybe we can have dinner together. What do you say?"

"Well," Luna began.

"Ugh," Yuzu groaned loudly, "Can't you two take your love fest somewhere else? You're grossing me out." Luna and Gerard looked at Yuzu, their expressions a mix of surprise and embarrassment.

"N-no, it's not like that!" Luna blushed, her cheeks turning a delicate shade of rose.

"Y-yeah," Gerard stammered, his face mirroring Luna's as a deep flush spread across it. "I'm just welcoming her to our village, that's all!"

"Sure you are," Yuzu said, a sly smirk playing on her lips.

"I am," Gerard insisted, regaining some of his composure, "and I don't see how it's any business of yours."

"It's not," Yuzu replied, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "But if you're going to have sex, do it at your house, not mine."

"WHAT?!" Gerard and Luna exclaimed in unison, their voices echoing with disbelief.

"What?" Yuzu cocked her head, a wicked grin spreading across her face. "Isn't that what this is leading to? You're so plain and boring, I thought you'd never get some, but you could do better than this blond bimbo."

A prominent tick mark appeared on Gerard's forehead, his jaw tightening. "I've had it up to here with your attitude, young lady! Maybe a spanking or two would set you straight!"

Another tick mark materialized on Yuzu's forehead, mirroring his anger. "Just try touching my ass, you perverted virgin, and watch how fast your ass hits the floor!"

"THAT'S ENOUGH!" Luna's shout cut through the tense air. She turned to Yuzu, her eyes blazing with a stern glare. "Yuzu, you need to apologize right this instant."

Yuzu turned her head with a defiant huff. "Why should I? He's the one who—" Yuzu began, but her words ended in a yelp as Luna's hand shot out, seizing her by the ear and pulling hard.

"You went too far. Apologize now," Luna said, her grip firm and unyielding on Yuzu's ear.

"B-but…" Yuzu whined, her voice laced with discomfort.

"Now, young lady," Luna's voice was sharp, leaving no room for argument.

"I'm sorry, Uncle Gerard!" Yuzu cried out, her voice a mix of pain and surrender. Luna finally released Yuzu's ear, allowing her to rub the tender lobe. A smirk played on Gerard's lips.

"Well, look at that. The demon child can be reeled in by ear pulling. If we knew that, we would have done it a long time ago," Gerard chortled, a wide grin stretching across his face, before abruptly silencing as Luna's icy glare bore into him.

"Don't start, Gerard-san. You are just as guilty as she is," Luna stated, her voice a low, warning rumble.

Gerard recoiled, a look of genuine surprise on his features. "Huh?"

"Don't 'huh' me, mister," Luna retorted, stepping forward and adopting a classic scolding posture, hands on her hips, her eyes narrowed. "You're a grown man arguing with a child. You should know better."

"But she-" Gerard began, his finger jabbing accusingly in Yuzu's direction, before his words withered and died under the intensity of Luna's unwavering gaze.

"Yes, ma'am," Gerard mumbled, his shoulders slumping in defeat.

"That's better," Luna affirmed, a hint of satisfaction in her tone. "Now I'm going to go greet the rest of the village. Yuzu, you go home and behave yourself." She then turned her attention back to Gerard. "And Gerard, thank you for the gift, but I'm going to have to decline your dinner invite."

Luna turned and walked away, a gentle wave over her shoulder as she departed. Gerard waved back, a comical look of dejection on his face as exaggerated tears streamed down his cheeks, having been shot down. He then shuffled away, his shoulders slumped. Yuzu, meanwhile, decided to head home, though indeed not because Luna had told her to, or anything.

 Yuzu kitchen

Yuzu stood, a storm brewing within her, the lingering sting in her ear a constant reminder of the encounter. She snarled, a low, guttural sound escaping her lips. That blonde bimbo! Who was she to dictate Yuzu's desires, to play the role of a maternal figure? The comparison, an unwelcome thought, surfaced—Luna's scolding, her domesticity, so reminiscent of Yuzu's own mother, who had once cooked and disciplined her. A ghost of a smile touched Yuzu's lips before she vehemently shook her head. No. Luna was not her mother. In fact, Yuzu wasn't sure what Luna was, beyond a blonde intruder who had inexplicably inserted herself into Yuzu's meticulously crafted life.

"Hmm," Yuzu mused, the thought a nascent seed in her mind. Takeru's words echoed, about the unsettling parallels between her life and Luna's. With a newfound curiosity, a burgeoning desire to understand, she wondered how Luna would have navigated Yuzu's current predicament. What truly made Luna tick? The questions bloomed, blossoming into an undeniable urge. Her curiosity reaching its zenith, Yuzu set out, drawn by an invisible thread, to discover Luna's whereabouts.

 000

"And that's how you make a perfect omelet," Luna announced, her voice bright and confident. The three housewives, their faces beaming with admiration, burst into applause.

"Wow, that's amazing, Luna-san," the first housewife gushed, her eyes wide with surprise.

"Yeah, I never knew you could use ingredients like that," the second housewife added, a thoughtful frown creasing her brow.

"Or that you could clean like that!" the third housewife exclaimed, her voice bubbling with enthusiasm. "Our houses are practically spotless!"

Luna's laughter tinkled like wind chimes as she curtsied with a graceful bow. "Thank you, ladies, but if you'll excuse me now."

The housewives waved goodbye, their smiles lingering as Luna gracefully departed. Meanwhile, Yuzu, hidden behind the weathered wall of a nearby house, continued to observe, a scowl deepening on her face.

'So she can cook and clean? Big deal,' Yuzu scoffed inwardly, rolling her eyes as she subtly began to trail Luna's retreating figure.

 000

Yuzu hunkered low behind the weathered corner of a small, rustic house, her eyes fixed on Luna. In the open, sun-dappled square, Luna was diligently kneading the gnarled shoulders of an ancient man.

"How is this, sir?" Luna's voice was gentle, a soft murmur accompanying the rhythmic press of her hands into the old man's weary frame.

A deep sigh of contentment escaped the old man's lips. "Oh, my dear, that feels utterly divine," he rasped, his voice thick with relief. Luna continued her ministrations, her movements precise and soothing, until finally, she eased her touch and helped the old man to his feet.

"How do you feel now?" she inquired, her gaze warm and solicitous.

A joyous, almost childlike grin spread across the old man's face. "Like a million bucks!" he declared, and to Yuzu's surprise, he began to bounce lightly on the balls of his feet, a renewed spring in his step. "Ah, I feel so incredibly young again! Thank you, my dear, thank you!"

Luna's laughter, a light, melodic sound, floated on the breeze. "You're most welcome, sir."

With a polite bow, Luna bid farewell to the rejuvenated old man, and Yuzu watched as they parted ways, a silent observer of the tender exchange.

'So, she possesses the skill of massage as well?' Yuzu mused, a flicker of grudging admiration in her thoughts. 'That's not entirely without merit.' As Luna turned to leave the square, Yuzu melted from her hiding spot, resuming her silent, watchful pursuit.

000

Yuzu, still concealed, observed an intriguing scene: Luna berating Gerard, who stood defensively, hands raised and sweat beading on his forehead. Yuzu's eyebrows shot up in question. Without warning, Luna seized Gerard by the ear and hauled him towards the shadowy forest.

"I can't believe you, Gerard!" Luna huffed, her voice sharp with indignation. "I thought you were better than that!"

"Ow, ow, wait, Luna, it's not what you think!" Gerard yelped, wincing.

"Not what I think?! You were peeking into that woman's house!"

"No, you misunderstand! I wasn't peeking, I was—" Luna tugged Gerard's ear with greater force, her grip unyielding.

"I'll teach you how I deal with perverts," Luna declared, her voice dropping to a menacing growl.

Luna and Gerard vanished into the dense foliage of the forest, Gerard's pained whimpers fading with their departure. Yuzu sweatdropped, a mixture of amusement and pity on her face.

"Rest in peace, Uncle Gerard," Yuzu murmured, pressing her palms together in a silent prayer. 000

Yuzu house

Later that night

Yuzu stood in the kitchen, meticulously piecing together what she knew about Luna, her gaze subtly tracking the woman's movements. From her observations, Luna appeared to be a nurturing and maternal presence, though tempered by a stubborn and somewhat intrusive nature. Yet, despite these glimpses, the vast majority of Luna remained an enigma. Yuzu shook her head, a frustrated sigh escaping her lips.

'Argh, all this thinking is driving me nuts. Screw it, I'll ask her directly,' Yuzu mused, the thought solidifying into a decision. Just as the resolution formed, Luna's familiar voice echoed through the house.

'I'm home,' Luna announced, her voice carrying a warm resonance.

'Welcome Home Mommy!' Takeru exclaimed, a blur of motion as he bounded down the stairs, engulfing his mother in a joyous embrace.

'How was your day?' Takeru asked, his eyes wide with curiosity.

'It was great! I got to make new friends and everybody was so nice, although Mommy did run into an issue...' Luna replied, a slight pause hinting at the unfinished thought.

"Oh no, did Mommy make an oopsie?" Takeru asked, his brow furrowed with concern.

"Kinda..." Luna admitted, scratching her cheek sheepishly. "How was I supposed to know Gerard-san was the village patrolman? He never told me!" She huffed, placing her hands on her hips. "And what kind of patrolman is allowed to peek into other people's houses, especially women's? And another thing..."

"Blond bimbo. Kitchen. Now," Yuzu's sharp voice cut through from the kitchen.

"Mommy, what did you do this time?!" Takeru exclaimed, his eyes wide with surprise.

"I don't know, sweetie, but she sounds serious. I'll see what she wants. And what do you mean 'this time,' you cheeky brat?" Luna smirked, playfully pinching Takeru's rosy cheek. Takeru giggled, a bright sound.

"Today, woman," Yuzu's voice was firm.

"Geez, I'm coming, Miss Impatient," Luna pouted, rolling her eyes. "Takeru, you go wait upstairs in our room. I'll tuck you in later."

"Okay, Mommy," Takeru replied obediently. Luna leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to Takeru's forehead before he trotted up the stairs. With a sigh, Luna turned and headed towards the kitchen, anticipating the confrontation.

"I'm here, Yuzu-chan," Luna's voice, soft as a whispered secret, finally broke the silence.

Yuzu's gaze, sharp and unwavering, pierced through Luna. Luna, momentarily perplexed, tilted her head, a question forming in her eyes.

"Something wrong, dear?" Luna's voice, a gentle caress, probed the depths of Yuzu's unusual silence. Yuzu's eyes, wide and searching, remained fixed on Luna for what felt like an eternity before she finally uttered the words that hung heavy in the air.

"Who are you?"

"Eh?" Luna's reply, a breathy whisper, was laced with confusion.

"I said, who are you?" Yuzu's voice, though small, carried an insistent tremor.

"I'm Luna, silly," Luna giggled, a lighthearted sound that seemed to dance in the air.

"Don't screw with me!" Yuzu's scream, raw and powerful, tore through the stillness of the room, her small fists slamming against the table, a furious drumbeat against the wood.

"Y-Yuzu?!" Luna's voice, a startled gasp, was barely audible.

Yuzu's finger, trembling with emotion, pointed accusingly at Luna. Tears, hot and stinging, welled in her eyes, blurring Luna's form into a shimmering haze. "You came out of nowhere, wanting to take care of me, and no matter how many times I push you away, you keep coming back! Why do you care so much about me?!" Yuzu's gaze, a poignant blend of hope and sorrow, pleaded with Luna. "Are you... Are you my mother?"

"Oh, Yuzu..." Luna's warm and comforting arms enveloped Yuzu in a tender embrace. They remained intertwined, a silent tableau of unspoken emotions, for a long moment. Finally, Luna gently released Yuzu, her smile a bittersweet curve, shadowed with an undeniable sadness.

"No, Yuzu, I'm not your mother," she replied gently, her voice soft as velvet. "I'm just an ordinary woman."

"But that can't be true! You act just like her," Yuzu insisted, her brow furrowed in confusion.

"Sorry, sweetie, but that's just my personality, a trait I inherited and amplified from my mother," she explained with a warm smile.

"That reminds me," Yuzu mused, a thought suddenly striking her. "Takeru told me that your parents were also killed on your fourth birthday."

"That's correct," Luna nodded sadly, her eyes downcast. "They were killed by an assassin who was after me."

"Just like me..." Yuzu gasped, her voice barely a whisper. Luna couldn't help but let out a soft, melancholic giggle.

"Yes," Luna continued, a distant look in her eyes. "My parents tried to protect me, but it was in vain. After killing them, the assassin simply vanished into thin air, and I was unjustly blamed for their murder."

"What did you do?" Yuzu asked, her voice laced with a mixture of shock and sympathy.

"I tried to tell them I didn't do it, but the people of my village refused to believe me. In response, I acted out, pulling cruel pranks and tormenting the villagers who had ostracized me. Eventually, they grew tired of my antics and banished me from the only home I'd ever known."

Yuzu listened, her mind reeling. She couldn't believe what she was hearing; it was a mirror image of her own painful past.

"What did you do after you were banished?" Yuzu asked, her voice trembling slightly, as she recognized a shared burden.

"I wandered around, feeling lost and hopeless, until I met someone truly extraordinary who changed my life. For the longest time, I believed myself to be a monster, a witch who brought nothing but death and misery. However, this person didn't see me that way. They saw me as a friend, assuring me that a real witch wouldn't possess such kindness and care, and that I was, in fact, the angel of life, bringing cheer and joy to everyone around me."

"What was this person like?" Yuzu asked, her voice soft with curiosity.

Luna's smile widened. "They were amazing – incredibly strong, incredibly kind, and a bit naive, which often led them into amusing predicaments. But as we spent years together, embarking on countless adventures, we grew closer until they became an absolutely vital part of my existence."

"I see," Yuzu breathed, her eyes wide with awe, before asking, "What happened to this person?"

Luna offered a wistful smile. "They… had to go away for a while, but their memory is etched deeply within me. Eventually, I found the strength to move on, to build a new life, and then Takeru came along, and the rest, as they say, is history."

"I see," Yuzu murmured, her gaze thoughtful.

Luna's smile softened. "So, does that satisfy your curiosity, at least for now?"

"Perhaps," Yuzu replied, a hint of something unsaid in her tone. "There's still one detail that puzzles me."

"Oh? And what might that be?" Luna prompted, her head tilted slightly.

"Why choose this specific village?"

"After bandits attacked my homeland and I had no other place to go, I decided to move to a peaceful village where I could raise Takaru in a calm environment. This place seemed like an idyllic haven for that very purpose."

Yuzu's eyes narrowed, her gaze piercing. "Really? This is your first time here?"

Luna shifted uneasily, a bead of sweat trickling down her temple. "Uh, yes?"

"That's funny," Yuzu mused, a hint of suspicion in her voice, "because when you first came to my house, you knew where everything was before I had a chance to show you around. You were aware of the picture and the plant my parents gave me, and you even mentioned that you came to this village specifically to see me."

Luna began sweating profusely, a nervous tremor in her hands. "Did I? That's odd." Luna started slowly backing away towards the kitchen doorway, her eyes darting nervously as Yuzu began to advance, her expression unyielding.

"What aren't you telling me?" Yuzu demanded, her voice sharp. Luna, her face suddenly pale, attempted to bolt from the kitchen. But Yuzu was faster, a blur of motion as she launched herself at Luna. The two collided in a whirlwind of limbs and fabric, a comical dust cloud erupting around them. They tumbled across the kitchen floor, a chaotic ballet of bumps and thuds, narrowly missing the sturdy oak table and the gleaming counters. Appliances teetered precariously before crashing to the tiled floor with a series of muffled thumps. The wrestling match continued for a breathless minute until they finally came to a halt in the center of the kitchen, Yuzu triumphant, pinning Luna to the linoleum.

"No more secrets, you blond bimbo! Tell me everything now!" Yuzu shrieked, her voice echoing off the kitchen walls as she twisted Luna's arm into a painful arm lock.

"Ow, ow, ow, okay! Okay! I will! Just let go!" Luna whimpered, tears, comically large, welling in her eyes. Yuzu, a satisfied smirk playing on her lips, released her grip. Both women scrambled to their feet, brushing themselves off before settling into chairs at the kitchen table.

"I'm waiting," Yuzu stated, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, one leg draped elegantly over the other. Luna rubbed her now throbbing arm, a long, exasperated sigh escaping her lips.

"The truth is, I knew your parents before you were born. Well, I knew your mom, to be exact. She and I were close, almost like sisters, growing up in the same small village. When tragedy struck and my parents were killed, she was the one who tried to comfort me, to guide me back to the right path. But I was blinded by grief and didn't listen, a stubbornness that ultimately led to my banishment. Years later, our paths crossed again. She told me she had gotten married and had a daughter, and she extended an invitation for me to visit. So, I did."

Yuzu's brow furrowed, a flicker of confusion crossing her face. "Mom never mentioned you."

Luna's lips curved into a soft giggle. "That's because I told her not to."

"Why?" Yuzu pressed, her voice laced with curiosity.

"Because I wanted it to be a surprise when I finally met you. I just wish it were under better circumstances." A shadow of sadness crossed Luna's features.

"What do you mean?"

Luna's gaze hardened, a flicker of pain in her eyes. "When you told me your parents were killed, . I knew it had to be the same assassin who took my own parents. I came here, driven by a desperate hope to stop him, to get my revenge finally. But I was too late."

"Wait, are you telling me you knew about the assassination attempt?" Yuzu's voice was barely a whisper, a mixture of surprise and dawning horror.

Luna nodded, her expression grim. Then, in the blink of an eye, a primal surge of fury consumed Yuzu. She launched herself across the table, a blur of motion, her hands clamping around Luna's throat. Her grip tightened, strangling her.

"SO IF YOU KNEW ABOUT IT, WHY DIDN'T YOU STOP IT?! MY PARENTS COULD STILL BE ALIVE!!" Yuzu's voice was a raw, guttural cry, thick with anguish and betrayal.

"I tried, but I ran into trouble! I'm sorry, Yuzu!" Luna gasped, her words choked and desperate, clawing at Yuzu's hands. Yuzu's grip loosened, and Luna crumpled, gasping for air, her chest heaving.

"I'm so sorry, Yuzu," Luna whispered, bowing her head in profound apology, tears welling in her eyes.

Yuzu collapsed onto the table, the raw, searing pain of her parents' loss overwhelming her. She buried her face in her arms, her body wracked with sobs.

"Are you okay, Yuzu?" Luna's voice was laced with concern, her eyes searching Yuzu's face.

"Yeah," Yuzu whispered, wiping away fresh tears that still clung to her eyelashes. "I know it's been a year, but I guess I'm finally accepting that my parents are truly gone and never coming back." A raw ache resonated in her voice.

Luna wrapped her arms around Yuzu, pulling her into a comforting embrace. "Oh, sweetie, your mother always had a saying: 'It's never goodbye, it's love you later.'"

"My mom said that before she died, but I never really understood what she meant," Yuzu admitted, her voice muffled against Luna's shoulder.

"It means that even though you're separated now, you will always reunite, even if it's just temporarily. You'll see each other again." Luna's voice was gentle, full of an unwavering certainty.

"I see," Yuzu murmured, a flicker of understanding in her eyes.

"Listen, Yuzu," Luna began, her grip tightening slightly. "I'm so incredibly sorry about what happened to your parents. But I promised your mom that I would take care of you if anything ever happened, if you'll allow me."

Yuzu let out a soft, melancholic sigh. "I guess I don't really have a choice. I'll need somebody to take care of me, even if it is a nosy, blond bimbo." A faint, almost imperceptible smirk touched her lips.

"Hey!" Luna feigned a gasp, her hand flying to her chest in mock outrage. "How do you think I feel, having to take care of a violent, obnoxious brat?"

"Who are you calling obnoxious, bimbo?" Yuzu retorted, a spark of playful defiance in her eyes.

"Who are you calling a bimbo, brat?" Luna shot back, a wide grin spreading across her face.

The two shared a genuine, hearty laugh that echoed warmly throughout the quiet house, a sound that seemed to chase away some of the lingering sadness.

"Well, it's been a long night," Luna finally said, her voice softer now. "Why don't you get some sleep?"

"Good idea," Yuzu yawned, stretching her arms above her head. As they heard sounds from the kitchen, she turned to Luna, a genuine, heartfelt smile gracing her face.

"Thank you, Luna," Yuzu said, her voice filled with a quiet gratitude as she headed towards her room.

Luna was taken aback for a moment, a surprised but tender expression crossing her features before she returned the smile.

"You're welcome, Yuzu."

6 years later

ring ring

Luna awoke to the insistent chirping of her alarm, groggily pulling herself from the warm embrace of her bed. After a refreshing shower, she dressed and made her way to the kitchen, where a delicious aroma enveloped her, pulling her in. She found Yuzu there, perched on a stool in front of the stove, humming a cheerful tune.

"Oh, good morning, Luna!" Yuzu exclaimed, her voice bright.

Luna stifled a yawn. "Yuzu… I told you that was supposed to be my job." She settled at the table as Yuzu placed a steaming plate and a mug of coffee before her.

"And I told you I'd handle it. You just relax and get ready for work," Yuzu countered. Luna sighed, taking a sip of her coffee.

Yuzu scanned the room. "Hey, where's Takeru?"

"Still sleeping…" Luna replied. Yuzu put her hands on her hips, a slight pout forming on her lips.

"Geez, I told that boy breakfast was eight o'clock sharp. I'll wake him up." Yuzu said, untying her apron and heading out of the kitchen.

Luna, lost in thought, pondered the drastic changes of the past six years, marked by the empire's rise to power. Villages had burgeoned, their growth fueled by imperial resources, a development met with mixed feelings among the populace who questioned the empire's methods. Luna herself had risen to prominence, now serving as the village patrolwoman and assistant, meticulously overseeing domestic affairs. Gerard, in turn, deftly managed the political landscape. The elder, still nominally the village head, was primarily confined to his bed by old age, entrusting most village decisions to the capable hands of Gerard and Luna.

Luna's gaze swept across the impeccably clean kitchen, lingering on the bounty of food laid out before her. A soft smile touched her lips as she glanced towards the doorway, where Yuzu stood.

Yet, the most profound transformation had unfolded within Yuzu herself. Following their initial conversation, Yuzu had eagerly sought Luna's tutelage in the domestic arts of cooking and cleaning. Luna had even imparted the unconventional skill of fighting with a ladle, a peculiar lesson Yuzu initially questioned but Luna insisted was a vital precaution. As Luna reminisced, a sudden cacophony of shouting pierced the air, emanating from the kitchen doorway. Her eyes found Yuzu and Takeru embroiled in an argument, Yuzu's hand clamped firmly around Takeru's ear.

"Ow! Yuzu! That hurts! I'm up, I'm up! Let go already!" Takeru whined, his voice a muffled complaint as Yuzu dragged him relentlessly through the kitchen. Finally, she released her grip, and Takeru immediately rubbed his throbbing ear, a grimace on his face. Yuzu, however, stood before him, arms crossed and an unmistakable scolding posture radiating from her.

"When I say get up, you get up, got it, Mister?" Yuzu's voice held a sharp edge, leaving no room for argument.

"Whatever," Takeru muttered under his breath, rolling his eyes in a show of defiance that Yuzu conveniently overlooked.

A short while later, the trio found themselves at the breakfast table, engaged in a lively conversation that filled the kitchen with a comforting buzz. As the last crumbs of their meal disappeared, Takeru pushed back his chair and stood.

''Thanks for breakfast,'' Takeru said ''I'm heading out to play with Ricky and Dave,'' As he was leaving, Luna stopped him.

"Hey, wait!" Luna gasped, her hand flying to her chest in mock horror. "Aren't you going to give your mommy a goodbye hug and kiss?!"

Takeru scoffed, a familiar roll of his eyes accompanying the sound. "Uh, no, Mom, I'm not a kid anymore."

Luna's face crumpled into a comically shocked expression, her lower lip trembling as she dramatically slumped against Yuzu, burying her face into her shoulder. Exaggerated, theatrical tears streamed down her cheeks.

"My baby doesn't want love from his mommy anymore!" Luna wailed, her voice muffled against Yuzu's shoulder, her arms tightening around her.

"There, there," Yuzu murmured, her hand gently patting Luna's head, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. Takeru sweatdropped, a bead of perspiration trickling down his temple.

"Anyway, I'm off," Takeru announced, eager to escape the dramatic display.

"Okay, sweetie, make sure to be careful out there," Luna called out, her voice still a little shaky from her performance.

"And don't play too hard that you get a boo-boo," Yuzu added, her tone light and teasing.

"And don't talk to strangers," Luna chimed in, her motherly instincts kicking into high gear.

"And come home before it gets dark," Yuzu concluded, listing off the usual parental warnings.

"And—"

"I GOT IT!" Takeru yelled, his voice laced with exasperation, before letting out a long, suffering sigh and finally making his escape out of the house.

"Geez," Yuzu pouted, her arms crossing in a thoughtful gesture. "We are just looking out for him; he doesn't need to be so grumpy about it."

Luna giggled, a warm sound. "He's at that age where he wants to act tough and doesn't want his mommies cuddling him."

"I guess so," Yuzu mused. "To think he used to be such a crybaby back then. He sure changed a lot."

Luna smiled, her gaze softening. "He's not the only one that changed."

Yuzu looked up at Luna, cocking her head. "What?" she inquired.

"Oh, nothing. Well, I should be off. I have to do my village duties," Luna said, her voice light.

"Make sure you don't work too hard and be back here by dinner."

Luna rolled her eyes playfully, a faint smile gracing her lips. "Yes, Mom," she teased as she walked out of the house.

000

Luna stood before the elder's house, surrounded by a whirlwind of villagers, their voices a cacophony of complaints and concerns.

"My garden has wilted! What do I do?!" a male villager's voice cut through the din, laced with desperation.

"I tried to make the omelet like you did, but I couldn't get it exactly right. What did I do wrong?!" a female housewife lamented, her tone a mix of frustration and yearning for culinary perfection.

Luna let out a weary sigh. "Calm yourselves. I will address each of your concerns. For now, please, go about your day."

The villagers, though still murmuring, slowly dispersed. Luna sank into the elder's chair, another sigh escaping her lips. Just then, a cool sensation pressed against her cheek. Startled, Luna looked up to find Gerard's warm smile greeting her, two condensation-slicked canned beverages in his hands.

"Hey there," Gerard said, his voice a comforting balm.

"Gerard…" Luna's voice was soft, a mix of surprise and relief.

Gerard offered her a can, then leaned back against the weathered wall of the elder's house, taking a long, refreshing sip from his own.

"Everything going okay?" Gerard asked, his voice a low rumble.

"Yeah," Luna replied, a sigh escaping her lips before she deadpanned, "I just wish the villagers wouldn't come to me for every little thing." Gerard let out a soft chuckle.

"That's to be expected when you baby them, Luna," Gerard observed, a hint of amusement in his tone.

"Hey, I wasn't trying to baby them!" Luna protested, her cheeks puffing out in indignation. "I just wanted to help them a little, but now they expect me to do everything!" Luna popped open her can with a soft hiss and took a long sip. "So, how is it going on your end?"

"Pretty well," Gerard said, a satisfied smirk playing on his lips. "I managed to secure the protection of the empire. As long as we pay their taxes, they will provide us with the necessary things we need to... what?" Gerard trailed off, noticing Luna's unblinking, deadpan stare.

"Oh, nothing," Luna said, her voice laced with a touch of sarcasm. "It's just you get the exciting job while I'm stuck here taking care of an entire village!" Luna sprang to her feet, dramatically seizing Gerard and shaking him, comically wailing, "Trade places with me!!"

"L-Luna, c-calm down," Gerard stammered, gently pushing Luna away. "The elder gave us these roles because they best suit both of our skills. I'm a good negotiator, and you're good at housekeeping and taking care of others." Gerard chuckled, a warm sound. "And besides, Luna, you're complaining now, but I know you wouldn't give this up for the world."

Luna turned her head, her lips pursed in a pout that slowly softened into a genuine smile.

"Yes, you're right."

Luna and Gerard continued to sip their drinks, their gaze sweeping over the bustling village, a sense of quiet contentment settling between them. Meanwhile, Takeru's joyful shouts could be heard from a distance as he played with his friends.

"So what do you guys want to play?" Takeru asked, his voice echoing in the sun-drenched park.

"Let's play catch!" a boy named Dave shouted, his eyes wide with excitement.

"We played that yesterday, Dave," Ricky countered, rolling his eyes dramatically. "Let's play something new."

"Like what, Ricky?" Dave questioned, a slight frown creasing his brow.

"How about Monster Mash?" Ricky suggested, a mischievous glint in his eyes.

"What's that?" Dave asked, clearly confused.

"It's where we find a monster and we mash it!" Ricky exclaimed, gesturing wildly.

"That sounds stupid," Takeru scoffed, crossing his arms. Ricky glared, a spark of annoyance in his gaze.

"Then what do you think we should play?"

"I think we should play—"

"Takeru!"

The three boys turned to see Yuzu standing there, a small, exasperated smile on her face.

"Yuzu?! What are you doing here?" Takeru said, his surprise evident.

"You forgot your lunch, silly!" Yuzu said, holding out a neatly packed bento box. Takeru took the lunch, a deep blush spreading across his face as his friends erupted in laughter.

"T-thanks, Yuzu, you can go now..." Takeru mumbled, attempting to push her away gently.

"Hold on, Mister," Yuzu said, stopping him. She peered at Takeru, her gaze sharp, and noticed something.

"You're all dirty!" Yuzu pulled out a pristine handkerchief. "Here, let me clean you up." She proceeded to wipe Takeru's face, much to his mortification, meticulously.

"S-stop it, Yuzu, you're embarrassing me," Takeru stammered, his friends' laughter intensifying.

"Hey, Takeru, having fun with your 'mommy'?" Ricky chuckled, a taunting tone in his voice. Takeru's eyes narrowed into a furious glare.

"Shut up—" Takeru began, but Yuzu stepped in front of him.

"Hey, don't make fun of my Takeru!" Yuzu scolded, her hands on her hips.

"Your Takeru? Don't tell me you think you're his mom or something," Ricky said, amusement dancing in his eyes.

"Of course not, Takeru is his own man. I just take care of all his needs and feed him, wake him up, and bathe him, that's all," Yuzu explained, completely earnest. Takeru's blush deepened, a fiery red. The boys burst into renewed laughter.

"What, do you change his diaper too?" Ricky teased, a wide grin on his face.

Yuzu placed her hands firmly on her hips. "Hey, I'll have you know I haven't changed Takeru's underwear since he was eight." The boys' laughter reached a fever pitch. At this point, Takeru's face was the color of a ripe tomato.

"Wow, Takeru, I didn't know you were such a momma's boy," Ricky said, wiping a tear from his eye.

"I am not—" Takeru protested, but Yuzu interrupted him.

"Hey!" Yuzu interjected, her voice sharp. "I told you to leave my Takeru alone!"

Ricky raised an eyebrow, a challenging glint in his eye. "Takeru, don't tell me you're going to let this flat-chested girl fight your battles for you?"

"F-flat-chested?" Yuzu stammered, a vein in her temple twitching.

Ricky laughed. "Yeah, you look more like a boy to me."

"Me too," Dave chimed in, grinning.

"WHY YOU…" Yuzu's voice was low and dangerous, a fiery aura shimmering around her, and an angry tick mark appearing on her forehead.

"WHY I OUTTA!!" Yuzu pulled out her trusty ladle, a glint of steel in the sunlight, and charged at the two boys.

"YUZU NO!!" Takeru yelled, desperately trying to stop Yuzu from unleashing her wrath on his friends. But it was too late. Yuzu leapt onto the boys, and a dust cloud erupted, obscuring the ensuing struggle. Meanwhile, Gerard and Luna watched the chaotic scene unfold from the quiet solitude of the Elder's house.

"Uh, shouldn't you stop that?" Gerard asked, his brow furrowed with concern.

Luna took another nonchalant sip from her can. "Are you crazy? I'm not getting in the middle of that."

"But solving disputes in the village is your job!" Gerard's voice rose, a hint of desperation in his tone.

"I'm on break right now," Luna replied, a smug smirk playing on her lips.

"Luna!" Gerard exclaimed, his exasperation growing.

Luna, feigning disinterest, hummed, "Luna's not here right now, leave a message after the beep, beep."

"You're impossible..." Gerard muttered, rubbing his temples in defeat.

Luna finished her drink, the last drops disappearing with a gulp, and tossed the empty can into a nearby bin. "Anyway, let's report to the elder."

"Yeah, good idea," Gerard agreed, a sense of relief washing over him as the two walked towards the elder's house, the chaotic sounds of the village slowly fading behind them.

The elder house

Luna and Gerard stood beside the elder's bed, his frail form a stark contrast to the lively man they once knew. He lay propped on pillows, his eyes, though clouded with age, still held a gentle warmth as he looked up at them. A weak smile touched his lips, a testament to his enduring spirit.

"Hello, Luna and Gerard," the Elder whispered, his voice thin but clear.

"Hey, old-timer," Gerard said, his voice laced with concern. "How do you feel?"

"I've been better," the Elder sighed, his gaze drifting to the window. "How is the village holding up?"

"It's doing well. I managed to secure the village's protection. The empire should provide the supplies we need from now on."

"Very good," the Elder replied, a weak smile gracing his lips. "And the villagers?"

"They are well—" Gerard started, only to be cut off.

"They are a colossal pain in my butt, is what they are!" Luna interrupted, a prominent tick mark throbbing on her forehead. Gerard sweatdropped, a nervous chuckle escaping him. The Elder, despite his frailty, found amusement in Luna's outburst and chuckled softly.

"I see they keep you busy," the Elder laughed before a fit of dry, hacking coughs seized him.

"Elder!" Luna and Gerard exclaimed in unison, their voices filled with worry as they rushed to his side.

"I'm fine," the Elder reassured, his voice raspy. "I just wish I were in better shape to help."

"It's okay, Elder," Gerard said, his hand gently resting on the Elder's arm. "We can handle the village."

"But," the Elder protested, his brow furrowed.

"Hey, it's fine," Luna said, her tone softening to a motherly warmth. "You just rest up and leave the rest to us."

"Thank you, you two. I'm counting on you both," the Elder said sincerely, his eyes filled with gratitude. Luna and Gerard nodded, offering him comforting smiles. After chatting for a while, the soft chime of an alarm filled the room. Hearing this, Luna rose from her seat.

"Well, it's time for your lunch, Elder. I'll start preparing it now." As Luna began to head towards the kitchen, she was stopped by Gerard.

"Hey, Luna?" Gerard called out, his voice tinged with a hint of nervousness.

"Yes?" Luna responded, turning to face him.

"After you finish, can you meet me in the forest area? I need to talk to you."

Luna's brow furrowed in confusion for a moment, then a knowing smile spread across her face.

"Sure thing, Gerard."

Gerard's smile widened. "Okay then, I'll go check on the village. I'll leave you two to it." Luna waved goodbye as Gerard left the house.

"Gerard is such a good guy, don't you think?" the Elder asked Luna, a thoughtful expression on his face. At that, Luna turned to the elder, her smile vanishing, replaced by a serious, almost stern expression.

"Elder, we need to talk," Luna said, her voice dropping to a grave whisper.

The Elder was taken aback by her sudden change in demeanor. "Is something the matter, Luna?"

"What I'm about to tell you might sound crazy, but it's all true," Luna said, her gaze unwavering.

The Elder nodded slowly, his eyes fixed on hers. "Okay, I'm listening."

Luna took a deep, steadying breath, preparing to reveal a truth that would undoubtedly shake the Elder to his core. "The truth is—"

Gerard stood amidst the ancient trees of the forest, the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy, as he awaited Luna's arrival.

"What's taking so long?" Gerard thought, his foot tapping an impatient rhythm against the forest floor. He fidgeted with the contents of his pockets, the rustle of fabric a counterpoint to the chirping of unseen birds. After what felt like an eternity, Luna finally appeared, her silhouette emerging from the deeper shadows of the woods.

"I'm sorry," Luna said, bowing her head in a gesture of apology. "I hope you weren't waiting long."

"Not at all," Gerard replied, a nervous chuckle escaping his lips.

A comfortable silence settled between them, punctuated only by the distant murmur of the forest.

"So, what do you want to talk about?" Luna asked, breaking the stillness.

Gerard's gaze dropped, his eyes fixed on the forest floor as he began, "Luna, I just want to say that you are an extraordinary person. You're sweet, genuinely caring, incredibly kind, and breathtakingly beautiful. I've never encountered anyone quite like you. I've harbored feelings for you since the very first day we met, and I truly believe this is destiny." He paused, taking a deep breath before continuing, "So, I have to ask..." Gerard reached into his pocket, his fingers closing around a small, black velvet box. He knelt on one knee, the soft earth yielding beneath him, and opened the box, revealing a gleaming ring nestled within. "Luna Noche, will you marry me?" Luna's expression became unreadable, her gaze fixed on Gerard. He watched her anxiously, his heart pounding in his chest.

"Luna?" Gerard prompted, his voice barely a whisper. Luna continued to stare, then a slow smile spread across her face.

"I like you too, Gerard," she said softly.

Gerard beamed, a wave of relief washing over him. "So then...!" he began, his voice filled with newfound hope.

"Not just you, but the elder, the villagers, and Yuzu. I like you all," Luna clarified, her smile unwavering.

"That's great, Luna, but..." Gerard said, a confused frown creasing his brow.

"When I first arrived in this village, I didn't know what to expect. I thought the villagers would reject me, but instead, they welcomed me with open arms. The elder has been so incredibly kind to me, and the villagers, although a pain in the neck at times, are genuinely nice people."

"Uh..." Gerard interjected, still trying to process her words.

"But the most unexpected development was Yuzu," Luna continued, her voice softening.

Gerard remained silent, his expression unreadable. Luna turned away, crossing her arms behind her back as she spoke. "When you guys first told me about her, I was a little surprised to find a little girl in a similar situation to when I was younger." Luna's mind drifted back to the spirited fights and arguments they had shared. "Although she was stubborn and at times, even violent, I couldn't ignore her. I wanted to help her move past her parents' death and truly live a good life, to ensure she wouldn't end up like me. And now, just look at her. I know her parents are looking down, undoubtedly proud of their little girl."

Luna turned back to Gerard, her smile radiating pure affection.

"I love her so much," she said, her voice filled with warmth.

Gerard's head dropped, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides. "Why?" he muttered, the word a mere whisper.

"Hm?" Luna replied, a slight tilt of her head.

"WHY!!!" Gerard roared, his voice laced with unbridled fury. Luna recoiled, taken aback by his sudden outburst.

"Gerard?" Luna said, her voice laced with surprise and apprehension.

Gerard sprang to his feet, the black box clattering to the ground. He roughly snatched Luna by the arm, his eyes blazing with intense fury.

"It's always 'Yuzu this,' 'Yuzu that'! First her, now you?! What about me?! I've busted my ass trying to help this village, and all I ask for is a little love and affection! But everywhere I turn, I hear, 'Isn't Yuzu wonderful? Isn't she amazing?' Yuzu, Yuzu, Yuzu! I'm tired of hearing it!!"

"Gerard, you're hurting me," Luna pleaded, struggling to free herself from his bruising grip. "It's about time that I get what I want for a change," Gerard growled, his voice low and menacing, as he forcefully pinned Luna to the ground.

"Gerard, please don't," Luna begged, tears welling in her eyes. Gerard ignored her pleas, his gaze fixed as he proceeded to lift her dress, his hand roughly caressing her leg.

"I said stop!" Luna screamed, her leg shooting up and connecting with Gerard's groin. He crumpled in a heap, a pained gasp escaping his lips. Luna scrambled to fix her dress, her movements swift and panicked, before scrambling to her feet and fleeing into the depths of the forest. Gerard snapped out of his daze, shaking his head as if to clear the fog.

"Luna, wait!" Gerard called out, his voice hoarse, but it was too late. Luna was already gone, swallowed by the shadows of the trees.

Yuzu house

Luna returns home, still trembling from her unsettling encounter with Gerard. A sudden eruption of shouts from the kitchen pierces the quiet. She cautiously steps into the room, her gaze falling upon Yuzu and Takeru, locked in a heated argument at the table.

"What's wrong with you?!" Takeru bellows, his face contorted in frustration.

"I'm sorry, Takeru," Yuzu replies, a hint of defiance in her voice, "but they were mocking us! They deserved what they got!"

"That doesn't give you the right to do that!"

Yuzu tilts her head, a stubborn glint in her eyes. "I really don't think what I did was that bad."

"Wasn't that bad?!" Takeru explodes, incredulity lacing his words. "You spanked them! You can't just spank my friends, Yuzu!"

Despite the tense atmosphere, Luna can't suppress a small, involuntary giggle at Takeru's exasperated outburst.

"I said I was sorry! I was just trying to protect you!" Yuzu insists, her voice rising.

"I don't need your protection! You're not my mom, Yuzu! I already have my mom annoying me enough as it is!"

"Hey, she's just trying to care for you, even if she is annoying," Yuzu counters. Luna's expression flattens into a deadpan, a visible angry tick mark appearing on her forehead.

"Just stay out of my business, you crazy girl!" Takeru snaps.

"What did you say?!"

"That's enough!" Luna's voice, though not a shout, cut through the kitchen, its quiet intensity silencing the argument. Yuzu and Takeru stopped mid-sentence, their heads swiveling towards her in unison.

"I had a long day today. The last thing I need is you two bickering," Luna sighed, her shoulders slumping slightly. She turned her gaze to Yuzu, her expression softening. "Yuzu, I appreciate you looking out for my son, but you can't take matters into your own hands like that. Now I have to talk to their parents."

Yuzu's gaze dropped to the floor, her shoulders slumping. "I'm sorry," she murmured, her voice barely audible.

"It's okay," Luna said, a gentle hand resting on Yuzu's arm. She then turned to Takeru, her brow furrowing slightly. "Takeru, Yuzu just had your best interest at heart."

Takeru scoffed, a sneer twisting his lips. "Yeah right, she just wants to run my life."

"That's not true!" Yuzu's voice was a desperate cry. "I just wanted—"

"Wanted to what? Help?!" Takeru interrupted, his voice rising in an angry crescendo. "You embarrassed me in front of my friends, and you beat them up. Now, because of your 'help,' my friends hate me, and they want nothing to do with me because of you!"

"That's enough out of you, young man. Go to your room." Luna's voice was firm, leaving no room for argument.

"But, mom—" Takeru began, his defiance still simmering.

"Room, now," Luna interjected, her tone unyielding.

Takeru grumbled, his shoulders hunched, as he shuffled towards the kitchen doorway. He paused there, turning to cast a final, resentful look at Yuzu. "Next time you want to help, just don't," he muttered, then stomped out of the kitchen. Yuzu watched him go, her face a mask of dejection. Luna, seeing her distress, gently patted her head.

"Hey, it's okay. He was just upset; he didn't mean it," Luna said softly, her voice a comforting balm.

"He's right, though," Yuzu choked out, tears welling in her eyes, blurring the edges of the kitchen. "I shouldn't have gotten involved. Now Takeru hates me."

"Oh, sweetie, he doesn't hate you," Luna soothed, her hand gently touching Yuzu's arm. "You two just disagreed, that's all. I'm sure you two will be friends again by tomorrow."

"But-"

Luna knelt down, bringing herself to Yuzu's eye level. Her gaze was steady and warm as she pressed her forehead gently against Yuzu's.

"Listen to me, Yuzu. You are a kind and caring individual who only wants the best for others."

"Luna?" Yuzu whispered, a flicker of surprise in her tear-streaked eyes.

"At first, I didn't know what to make of you. You were a rude and foul-mouthed little brat-"

"Hey!" Yuzu interrupted, a small, indignant sound. Luna smiled and continued.

"But over time, you have grown into an exceptional girl. Sure, you can be stubborn and overbearing, but that kind and gentle nature is what makes you, you. You are not a witch of death, but an angel of life, and I love you."

Yuzu stood frozen, her mind struggling to process Luna's unexpected words. Luna's smile widened, a soft glow in her eyes, and she leaned forward to press a tender kiss to Yuzu's forehead.

"Now, go on and get to bed. If it's not too much to ask, I would like to tuck you in like I used to."

"Luna, you don't need to," Yuzu protested faintly.

"Yes, I do, please," Luna pleaded, her voice laced with a genuine desire.

"Uh, sure," Yuzu said, still a little taken aback, but a small, hesitant smile touched her lips.

"Thank you," Luna said, a wave of relief washing over her as Yuzu slowly made her way out of the kitchen. Luna stood for a moment, deep in thought, a myriad of emotions playing across her features.

"Kentaro, Mami, I know you're looking down at your daughter and seeing how much she has blossomed. I know you're very proud of her," she murmured, her gaze darting around the meticulously clean kitchen, a nervous habit she'd never quite shed.

"Still, even though everything is unfolding as it should, I can't help but wonder if I'm truly doing the right thing. Did I make a mistake somewhere along the way?"

Luna's hand trembled slightly as she reached into the bodice of her simple dress, extracting a faded photograph. Her eyes, usually so vibrant, clouded over with a profound sadness as she gazed at the image.

"Tell me," she whispered, her voice barely a breath, "do you truly believe I'm on the correct path? What difficult choices would you have made if you were burdened with my responsibilities?"

Luna stared at the aged photograph for what felt like an eternity, the silence in the kitchen heavy with unspoken questions. Finally, a long, weary sigh escaped her lips.

"You're right."

With a melancholic reverence, Luna carefully placed the picture back within the folds of her dress. She turned, her footsteps almost silent as she began to move towards the kitchen doorway, but then paused, casting one last, lingering glance back at the room.

"Only time will tell."
